Default Big Bonus on table for USAF fighter pilots

This just posted on AF Times website

Air Force offers fighter pilots $225,000 to stay in | Air Force Times | airforcetimes.com

Looks like the sleeping giant may have awakened to the sounds of footsteps marching toward the door

Interesting. It's still $25K/year before taxes. Some guys will take it. Those who don't will be able to make far more than an extra $225K over 9 years with UAL/DAL/AAL...

That's not a big bonus! This is comical!

$25k/yr is the same pilot bonus the AF has been offering since around 1999-2000 or so, when they upped it from $14k/yr.

The only thing new in this case is that Big Blue is offering the fighter guys a 9-year contract which would take someone all the way to 20yrs of service. The previous standard was a 5-year contract (which non-fighter pilots are still being offered).

Is the fact that you can take $110,000 up front not new?

When I was eligible for the bonus (a long time ago) there was no up-front opportunity.

To my knowledge (going back to mid-90s), the AF has always offered the 50% lump sum option with the bonus. In this case, a 9-year contract is worth a total of $225,000, so the 50% option lets you take 112,500 just for signing.

The previous (standard) 5-year contracts were/are worth $125,000, so the 50% lump sum is/was $67,500.

In '99 and '00 we were eligible for bonuses that took us out to 20 or 25 years. That potentially could be 14 years x $25,000 = $350,000...half up front being $175,000 minus 28% tax = $136,500.

they did away with the lump sum maybe 5 years ago i think. brought it back last yr when it was still 25/5.

i signed it 2 years ago and there was no 50% option.

That is good.
USMC didn't offer that option.
I would have taken advantage of that.
