$25k/yr is the same pilot bonus the AF has been offering since around 1999-2000 or so, when they upped it from $14k/yr.
The only thing new in this case is that Big Blue is offering the fighter guys a 9-year contract which would take someone all the way to 20yrs of service. The previous standard was a 5-year contract (which non-fighter pilots are still being offered).

When I was eligible for the bonus (a long time ago) there was no up-front opportunity.

The previous (standard) 5-year contracts were/are worth $125,000, so the 50% lump sum is/was $67,500.

To my knowledge (going back to mid-90s), the AF has always offered the 50% lump sum option with the bonus. In this case, a 9-year contract is worth a total of $225,000, so the 50% option lets you take 112,500 just for signing.

USMC didn't offer that option.
I would have taken advantage of that.
