Incorrect...they changed that in the mid-2000s, 5 year, 25 per, no up front payment. If they are using the upfront method now, then things are far worse than they tried to intimate...

Anyone choosing to take this bonus who even thinks they wouldn't like sticking around for another 10 years of this clown show deserves what they get...squadrons closing, idiots running the show, fewer hours.

Really? I stand corrected. I stopped paying attention a few years ago when my contract expired.

I remember those years too... unfortunately I wasn't quite eligible yet when that was offered. I remember guys in my squadron signing on for it though.

So what they're really saying is we have very little experience left, we can now see the train wreck coming which was easily forecasted by even the most junior LT in the sq years ago, and we want to give you a retirement pay check so sign upmnow before we change the retirment rules. BTW if you take it now while still in OEF you should be able to get most of the lump sum tax free. When I got the $125k over 5 years I got back all but about 3-4k as a result of CTZE.

In 2000, they offered 1 yr, 3 yr, 5 yr, through 20 years service, or through 25 years of service. The 5 yr, 20, and 25 options were at 25k per year. I don't remember what the 1 yr and 3 yr offerings were, but they were less cash. The upfront amount was limited to 50% or 100k, whichever was less.

That's not a big bonus! This is comical!
This.

Guys that were going to stay in any way will take it, the rest will laugh and carry on. $225k for four years with guaranteed flying orders for the duration, and my run for the door might slow to a fast walk for a few steps.

In a twist of fate the Marines are paying F-18 O-4s $200k to get out.

Doesn't matter where you are when you receive it...you pay taxes no matter.

IIRC, 1 and 3 yr agreements were 12K/year. In retrospect, I'm really glad they did not offer 20 and 25 YAS agreements when I came up for my bonus else I would have been tempted to take it and be shackled for an additional 3-8 years of service beyond 20.

For those at the 11 year point who are considering this, please read the fine print. My question is this:
If you get passed over for O-5, can the AF involuntarily separate you?
If you are RIF'd, will the AF require you to pay back your remaining bonus?

Bottom line:
- under what terms can YOU get out of the bonus early?
- under what terms can the AF terminate the contract unilaterally?

BIG BONUS???

In 1997 I signed the 25K/year bonus that took me out to 20 yrs of aviation service. Due to only having an 8 yr pilot training commitment the contract was for 11 yrs. 275K and 50% up front. That was 16 years ago. Adjust for inflation and they need to be offering at least 35K/year to make it comparable to what guys got in the past. Throw in the large number of airline pilot retirements kicking in now and the writing is on the wall -- mass exodus.
Good news for those who stay though is that promotion rates will skyrocket because you'll be competing against a much smaller number for promotion.

Get out now, go to a major airline, upgrade to CA 9 years earlier. They must think people are dumb. That extra $18750 a year would be negated by the extra $100,000 (x9) they're foregoing by passing on an airline job. The only thing to consider is the military retirement...but will it still be the same in 9 years? We were lucky. We retired at the right time. It scares me to see how bad it will get for guys 9 years younger than us between now and then. Unless they were planning on staying anyway and they're ready for the pain I wouldn't touch this bonus with a 10' pole....
