I bet you have some great stories you can't tell.

Thank you for your service!

ps. There was a great Thunderstorm documentary on one of the science channels a while back where an international group of pilots and planes went to Australia to study some unique phenomenon. They flew everything from a GA plane, to the Russian a/c pictured above, to Rutan's White Night - getting data from an altitude of a few hundred feet to however high the Russians can go.

Doesn't NASA still operate a couple of these for "real" weather research?

A buddy and I were skirting a Gulf hurricane a few years back when we heard a NASA weather ship checking in, descending OUT of FL600, after overflying the storm. We both looked at each other with a kind of "wow!" expression.

One of these is being worked on at KAPA, and it is currently in green primer. Really cool. It is the second time that I've seen one outside of the boneyard or a museum.

Thunderheads documentary on the Smithsonian Channel. Check out the video preview: Thunderheads | Smithsonian Channel

There was a lot more flying shown than the preview leads you to believe.

If you visited the one at the Warner Robins AFB Museum, it's no longer there. You might want to check around KAPA.

FTrooppilot,
You'll be happy to know that, after 41 years on the ground, the WB-57 at KAPA took off yesterday and flew to KCOS.

Good stuff about the Shuttle images!
Back in the 80's, the U-2 was tasked to shoot the belly of the Shuttle with one of our cameras during the ascent, to help determine when they were losing the heat-tiles.
