Good stuff about the Shuttle images!
Back in the 80's, the U-2 was tasked to shoot the belly of the Shuttle with one of our cameras during the ascent, to help determine when they were losing the heat-tiles.
Thanks Huggy. Good news. Here is a photo of a shuttle launch taken with a handheld camera inside a WB57F.

Saw one of those NASA WB-57s in Niamey, Niger several years ago. Took in some AGE equipment and other odds and ends to the ground crew there. Still puzzles me what they were doing. They claimed some kind of desert weather reasearch but who knows for sure. Awesome looking airplane.

OK Folks. Here is the heavy reading. If you ever wanted to learn about the U-2 and A-12 / SR-71 programs and Area 51, this recently declassified document has it all.

1. How the only military pilots to fly over the USSR were British Pilots.
2. How Pres. Johnson misnamed the SR-71. (Should have been RS-71.)
3. How Powers was shot down. (3 SAMS one of which killed a MIG Pilot)

Enjoy

6. How 104 overflights were conducted over the China.
7. How China shot down 5 U-2s.

FTroop,

Thanks for the photos, stories, and links to some great stuff. Back in the day, 1966 to be specific, I was an enlisted swine with an AFSC of weapons mechanic. I loaded conventional and special weapons on Yokota's F-105's. Every few days we'd be assigned EOR duties, which included arming the Thuds as they were about to go fly and then dearming them when the landed. A lot of time was spent out at the end of the runway just waiting. On of the daily highlights was to watch the big winged 57's takeoff and land. They would usually climb out of sight by the end of the departure end of the runway. Very cool. Thanks for the memories.
