I retired a long time ago so things may have changed, but when I was in Air Force pilots flew as their main job and had a few or no additional duties. Navy pilots were expected to be naval officers and have a job and then flew.

Actually if you count helos the navy has more aircraft than af and just like the army has more boats than the navy. Go figure.

Default Navy vs Air Force vs Guard

Just like anything else there are good things and bad things about each service. It's like asking if you should date a blonde or brunette? The blonde has some great qualities, is a lot of fun, loves to party, is hot yet a little trashy, lets you do whatever you want, she makes you spend allll of your time with her and you're kind of sick of her ****.

Now on the other hand, you have the brunette, who is super sexy, sophisticated, her parents are f-ing loaded, she has some pretty stupid rules you have to put up with, doesn't let you do anything outside of her rules and yet again, you're sick of her ****.

The guy with the blonde is jealous of the guy with the brunette and the guy with the brunette is jealous of the blonde. But look! There is that redhead over there. Wow, she looks good, hell even better than the blonde and brunette! Couldn't get any better right? Wrong! Turns out the redhead is bat**** crazy, has ridiculous daddy issues, can't seem to get her **** together, embarrasses you when you take her out in public and just seems fake.

The answer is easy. Take the first one you can get but in the end you will be **** of her ****.

Things have changed.

I was USAF and spent a tour teaching with the Navy, now AFRC. Go Guard/Reserves.

If you want to fly, join the Navy. You will have a better chance of flying an aircraft. Your commitment is shorter. You will also (likely) deploy aboard a ship.

If you want to fly a plane, join the Air Force. You will have a better chance of flying an airplane. You are also more likely to drive a drone.

The Coast Guard route was also mentioned...I recommend this. Few, if any, deployments. You will still move around, but it will be within the US.;

Keep on working the civilian side of aviation and hustle your way into a Guard/Reserve slot (any service). If your passion is to serve your country, never stop trying to achieve this. If your passion is to get a great job flying, you will probably get there regardless...even if it takes a while longer.

The only issue with the Guard is you have to find another job. I guess you could bum full time.

Being a part timer is what makes the Guard such a great gig!

To the OP: Bonus points if you can get hired at a base that allows you to live in base for your mil job AND your civilian job! Also, I would reccomend your hierarchy be Guard then Reserve.
