I own my own piston aircraft as well and my understanding is that it technically will, but the unspoken minimum is based on paid turbine time. Basically they want you current on turbine ops and willing to work. Flying your own piston won't satisfy either angle behind that spirit of intent. It gets worse as your last turbine flight date gets further in the past, same for last paid flying gig.

"No. But the next question will be - when was the last time you were a professional pilot? There's thousands of qualified guys, do you think your resume, that's getting staler by the month, is better than the thousands that are actively flying?" So the answer could also be - "that depends", "not immediately" or "it will shortly." This is all clear as mud. And the people that know the answer don't break out the details, you either get called or you don't. Why is never mentioned. And some carriers have basically said "100 hrs RJ turbine or larger in the last year." But maybe mil SEL is an exception? Maybe because it's an active military assignment ("professional pilot")? ^^ Questions to ask at WAI at the airline specific briefings. |

Depends on the unit. I can tell you my -135 unit is darn desperate for pilots right now. Between this past year and this year coming up, we'll be down over 10 Lt Col's from retirements. People just aren't going to put up with the rotating mobilizations with no end in sight without dropping papers. We even lost people under 20 to non-deployable Guard/Reserve jobs. People are spent and we can't keep up with it. When most of them are 10-12 year FO's on wide bodies making $200k a year, they don't need the Guard. From a leadership standpoint, you're always between a rock and a hardplace keeping guys after 20. They're your most experienced guys you don't want to get rid of, but they hold your nuts in their hands when i comes to controlling manpower. It helps to have more people in the 10-15 yr range when times are tough.

Hello. I just got passed for major after my first look. I am expecting to get passed on the next board and should find out next December. I am wondering when this next year I should apply to the majors. Is it bad practice to apply before getting passed the second time? 6 months out seems to be the standard for applying from what I've read. If he doesnt get a DP after being passed over once he is most likely done. Everyone I know who missed it the first time who managed to get it the second time had a DP, and it was extremely rare to get a DP for the second try. My guess is the OP knows he is not getting a DP, IMO.

I used palace chase. Best thing I ever did. The big thing is you need to have 100 hrs in the last 12 months. Start finding a reserve/Grd gig now. Go there as a full time guy. There will be guys there that are already in the airlines. You can keep current, with the pay you make now and just wait to get picked up. Then you simply transition to a part time guy. If you don't get picked up right away just stay on as a full time guy making good money until you do. That's the best path in my opinion.
2nd way is to go regionals for a while. My buddy got passed over for O-4. Flys for AA now and loves it. |
