Trying to sale my wife on the idea...

Thanks

Good grief WHY? There are so many better gigs out there these days it boggles the mind that NJ is considered a step up...

My current salary is approximately $30k a year more than I would earn at NetJets, but when you add the 401k match, sick time buyback, extra pay for working national holidays etc. there's not much in it over a 5 year period. Add what i'd save in crew meals too and the net totals are very close. The difference being i'd be working a 7 & 7 schedule at NetJets v's my current 8 & 6.

Yea in the private jet space, you aren’t gonna beat NJA over the long run. Almost any airline, it’s not even a close comparison.

Which goes back to the argument of whether you're trying to earn as much money as possible or the 7 on 7 off home base is more important. I personally hate the thought of commuting and crash pads. To each their own.

Can’t blame you for that at all. Crash pads sound so terrible. If I was commuting I would do what lots of guys do and that’s just get hotels when they need it. Most commuters I talk to get 12 days at home including commuting, only need a hotel a couple times a month, and still make more money than somebody on the 76 day for the same longevity. But make no mistake, commuting adds a level of stress that you won’t have at NetJets, although you get treated better jumpseating no matter who the airline, than you do with a group 5 boarding pass and a middle seat with NJA.

Any way you slice it, the money is practically incomparable between most airlines and NJA. Especially when you look at 5-10-15-20 years from now. No way around the fact that commuting adds a crappy element though.

Just curious: Don't NJA pilots typically have enough status with most airlines to get priority boarding most of the time?

It greatly depends on where you live. If your base has only one or two airlines serving it, its pretty easy to build status. If you live in a huge metro area where you can be put on anyone, then no its not easy.

In the CA Bay Area, I was OAK based but I could be flown out of OAK, SFO, SJC so I could literally be flown on anyone, and the same goes for coming home.

You do have the ability to dummy ticket and book your own ticket on the airline of your choice so you can build status, but you only get reimbursed 80% of the original ticket price, and NJA pays absolutely stupid low ticket prices so if building status is worth potentially several hundred or thousand dollars, you have the ability to do it.

Most pilots are able to build status on one airline, I got A list on SWA but everyone else I had nothing.
