Not to bash Great Lakes or the 1900but what's up with the heat on the airplane? My daughter left Jamestown when it was -20 or so outside and boarded a freezing cold plane that never warmed up. The cockpit door was kept closed and when it was opened she felt the heat come out and into the pax area. Was that just avionics heat the pilots kept upfront? To say the least she was not happy at all being frozen when she landed in MSP. She thought the crew shut the door to trap what little heat there was.
At least a CRJ has heat!

The 1900 is notoriously difficult to heat/cool properly. The auto function of the environmental mode controller does not work well, so the FO is constantly manually opening and closing the mixer valve. The cockpit is always warmer than the back, so it is difficult to judge the temperature for the pax. Also, most pilots immediately turn the blowers on HI when they get everything going. I believe they do this out of habit without letting the cabin warm up first.

Gouge for riding in the back of the nineteen-hundo:

Layer up no matter the outside temperature. Even in the middle of summer, I would bring a jacket and a hat. You can always take the layers off!

I know it sucks, but the environmental system was designed for the cross-section of a King Air 350; hence the poor pressurization and heating/cooling qualities.

The 1900 is the chicken-bus of airliners. I find it amusing that pax have any sort of high expectations at all.

For what it was designed to do I don't think you are giving it enough credit. It has been around for 30 years and has been the mainstay of many a regional operator prior to the advent of SJS regionals.

Wiki:
In terms of the number of aircraft built and its continued use by many passenger airlines and other users, it is one of the most popular 19-passenger airliners in history.[2]

Wiki:
Absolutely, solid airplane with a good history. Chicken buses were shiny and new once too. But pax nowdays expect more amenities, at least in the US.

It works really well up here in Alaska on many routes. Whether you should be paying for it to do so via EAS is another topic (we basically subsidize the entire villages, not just the EAS).

To quote one guy I used to fly with:

"The pax have to deal with being cooked/frozen for 45 minutes/1 leg at a time...we have to deal with it for 8 legs a day. Make sure we (the pilots) are comfortable."

Whether you agree or not with that sentiment, that's another discussion. Not justifying being hot/cold, that's just the reality.

Thanks 680.

As usual the crew gets looked at for things beyond their control.

So, why would someone rather fly in the back of a 1900 instead of a CRJ-200?
