We used to have to push the plane to a cliff and then pop start the steam engines in free fall. Those were the days.

They may be doing that through an LOA. At PDT pilots are not compensated at the CA rate until they complete CA training and operate a revenue flight. If the company wants to pay DECs as CAs during training they need to negotiate that with the union.
