Don't get me wrong: I wouldn't show up to an interview without a suit, either. Just sharing what I was told over the phone by the person who ended up interviewing me. More of a "don't worry so much about exactly what colors your suit is."

It worked for me, but the test was a little intimidating.

But it's your right to dress however you want. Sue the bastards if they don't hire you because you showed up unshaven, in blue jeans and a T shirt saying America sucks! We are a free country!

Now wait a second. The interviewer tells you on the phone to dress business casual, and you're supposed to ignore that and show up in a suit? And that's considered some kind of evaluation? They give you brownie points for not following directions? Please.
I've been on the other side of plenty of pilot interviews, and always made a point of saying business casual is fine...leave the suit at home. Most obliged, a few did not. Wasn't a big deal but it did make me think they were a bit goofy after I told them not to.
In the absence of other information, sure a suit is always a good bet. But if the interviewer tells you what they expect, I think it's better to follow their lead.
