Default Should I let my medical expire?

My first class medical is about to expire ... will the AME consider it weird if I wait to renew it until I go back to school in January (taking a semester off)?

Your medical won't "expire", it will just revert to 3rd class privileges... So why would the AME care?

If you're in school I take it you don't have an ATP. He probably thinks it weird you're getting a First class. Yeah I've heard you should get one so you know you'll pass it when you need it and it's easier to get a wavier if you have one already. The EKG doesn't kick in till 35 so you won't know what they'll find, most of the rest is medical history and blood pressure so you could just get a Third or Second as needed and ask if you would pass a First.

No he won't think you're weird. I always get a 1C but would allow it to lapse down to whatever I happen to need at the time.

Let it revert, I usually do, or did when I didn't have to have a 1st class. Under 40 it's good for flight for a total of 60 months. I usually encourage my career oriented students to get a 1st class the very first time they get a medical so they make sure as not to spend gobs on flight training and then find out they can't ever be a professional aviator.

No, he won't think it strange.

It reverted a long time ago (I've had my medical for almost 5 years) ... it will expire soon.

P.S. I'm sorry for the confusion, the way I was taught ... a first class medical will always be a first class medical even after it stops being valid for Airline Transport (that's why I wrote 1st class)

True. It is still a 1C (valid only for 3C privileges now).
