Default Low Salt Diet

I'm on a low salt / low sodium diet for health reasons. I'm just curious to hear from other pilots who may be on a low sodium diet and how difficult or easy it is to maintain that diet while working for an airline. When pilots are on the flight deck, do they have access to the low sodium airline meal options that a paying customer can request?

Veggies are always a solid option. I always bring a bag of carrots, apples and the alike to snack on. Avoid anything in a can/processed.

When I was flying I tried to limit my intake of salt. Very hard to do with airport food being like all fast food and loaded with salt. Avoid the hotel vending machine and packaged nuts/pretzels during flights. I think what's also as bad is all the soda you end up drinking since it's free during the flight and the caffeine a good kickstart on early showtimes.

I actually found not eating while cruising helped the most. Because our tastebuds are not as sensitive at altitude those little salt/pepper packets add flavor to the food your eating. Which if your trying to cut salt are that much worse since you can barely taste the salt you just dumped on your meal.

Probably packing your food is the best way to go.

Good read on salt intake. Low sodium isn't necessarily a good thing, depending on a number of other factors.

Default Iodine?

Not a doc but they put Iodine in salt years ago for a reason. Might be something you will then need to supplement.

Goiter really isn't much of an issue these days. Supplement with yogurt, green leaffys (soil dependent), and sushi (seaweed wraps). If you take an iodine containing multi-vitamin you'll get the RDA. To much iodine can create thyroid issues.

All processed foods use iodinated salt, not sea salt, so unless the OP is on a no salt diet vs. a low salt diet (good luck with that) there probably isn't a risk of an iodine deficiency.

Living with a Dr. of Nutrition for 20+ years, some of that stuff rubs off!

Not on a no salt diet. I just need to try to maintain less than 2000 mg of sodium per day. Not impossible, but not easy. I'm able to pack my own lunch now and limit how often I eat out. I just worry that may be more difficult living life on the road for 3-5 days at a time.
