this might be a stupid question, but when they say a year on reserve for new hires. Do they actually mean 12 months starting after IOE, or 12 months from date of hire?

im about to go to training in just a few weeks and I’m hoping for DCA

Define Reserve: short? long? hot?
Timed to gate or airport?
Is the month a mix?
Does one get stuck for many months on short?

I have places to go at 1:10 or 1:30 or 2:00 drive time or metro to airport, so minutes matter if on short call. Sucks that home is 2:45 from airport, so less than long call is super fun time.

I'm currently doing systems. Anyone have any tips on how to study for systems+callouts, procedures, flows all at the same time? I feel like they are both too much to study at the same time, it's either one or the other. How can I balance these?

I don't want to go to the mock KV with weak knowledge but strong procedure skills

Or I don't want to go to the mock KV with good knowledge but weak procedure skills

I feel like 2 weeks is not enough time to get these down fluently

You just gotta buckle down and do it. Make flashcards for the memorization items and systems. You shouldn't have much for flows/procedures on the KV. The KV is more limitations, systems, and FOM items.

Study for 30 minutes and take a 10-15 min break. I usually went for a walk and listened to some music or an audiobook. Study for another 30 minutes and take a break, so on and so forth. I also made sticky notes with limitations and would stick them on the mirror in the bathroom or on my nightstand. You want to constantly be looking at that stuff.

Yes, it's a lot to take in. But your only job during training is to study. That's what you're being paid to do. Get a group of 4 or 5 in your class and quiz each other in the systems/limitations. It helps to be asked questions by someone else, it gets you out of comfort zone and forces you to think.

Stay positive and study hard and you'll be fine. Good luck!

Take a look at Quizlet. There are tons of flashcard sets already made for every system or you can make your own. It really saved a lot of time and you can share them with your group if you want. If you decide to use pre made sets, I would go through each one and make sure they are correct. It may sound like a drag, but as you look each one up, you are also learning them. With Quizlet, you can mark the ones you are having difficulty with so you can spend more time on those.

I don't know if you ever used Sheppard Air, but I took that mentality with it. I would work through a system. I went through all of them reading the answers. Then I would go through them without reading the answers. Then I would go through them again marking the ones I didn't know. Repeat that through all of the systems. Over and over and over and over again.

In terms of what to study and when, I focused most of my time on systems and my study breaks were sitting in front of the paper tiger going through all of the flows and call outs. I would go through each of them once or twice (which took may 15-20 minutes?) and then go back to systems. Systems are only half a day or so, so you should have plenty of time in the day to get some good studying. Don't forget to go to the gym or get some exercise and eat properly.

If you don't mind, can you share which base you hold RD1 for?
Just want to have an idea of the time it takes to hold RD1 lines for all the 4 bases.
Thanks

You have to remember there was a 9-10 month gap of no hiring, DCA should drop to 11-12 months soon.
