Since the iPads have shown up, it's always been required to check for updates every single day. That doesn't necessarily mean you have to comply with things each day, but we've always had to update each day.

Agreed. I always updated everything including the jepp app the day my trip started. There were several times it would be day 2 or 3 and I would have a red notification saying I’m out of date completely skipping over yellow. Not because I’m lazy… when I’m waking up at 3:30am for a 4am van in OAJ… the last thing I’m thinking about is “did I update my iPad last night”.

At AA, as long as your iPad is up to date when your trip starts… it doesn’t matter what happens after that.

Never had that one pop up on any line checks I gave. Pretty easy to open up FD pro at the beginning of the flight and see a red update icon in the top right. Guess guys hit the update button while I stowed my bag and hit the head.

edit: also “unscheduled” Jepp update were always a yellow icon which was not considered expired.

You had to sync 365, you’re right. Easy fix was to change the setting to “update upon opening the app”.

I never heard anyone getting busted for that one. The external battery not being charged I heard about (never occurred on any line checks I gave)

The battery issue de-qual definitely happened… I was the FO who called out sick on that overnight and found out about it from the reserve captain the next day when I picked the trip back up. The LCA was also a former CP.

Well when PSA first got them they weren’t strict, then all on one day a bunch of pilots jepp apps crashed.

Come to find out it was so old the apple certificate expired for that version. Come to find out they couldn’t download the new one because their IOS is so far out of date.

The company purchased iPads for everyone and so many literally ran until failure they couldn’t just discipline those pilots, so they set a strict policy for everyone.

I doubt any checkpilot would balk at you if you tell them you didn’t touch it during rest and will never touch it during rest, and show to the gate 45 prior to update it and plan to go down the bridge 35 prior with an updated iPad. If your on it your on it, if your unaware your unaware.

You can worry about it during rest and update it on duty, or do it on rest and not worry about it on duty they wouldn’t care.

For me, worrying is more disruptive to rest than the task of updating it.

I fully believe you, CA lifer would have known it was not strict until a different CA got caught without one. Then having it on you, and having it charged became strict.

Too many pilots ignore the rules unless there is a corresponding threat of discipline.

Pilots: “No one has said anything they must not care”
Mgmt: “They are adults that know how to read, we shouldn’t have to say anything, guess we’re gonna have to make an example out of someone”

Pilots, offended and completely blown away when a rule is enforced after boiling over.

Default Professionalism?

"I don't have to do this or that until..." "I'm on rest. that means I don't have to do ...."
Minimum compliance shouldn't be a goal you attempt to achieve if you are a professional.
You're supposed to be a professional aviator. Act like one and your job gets a lot easier. Unless, of course, you thrive on the drama.
After all it's your reputation and the safety of your passengers.
