Carry a backpack? What kind? Unprofessional?

This profession used to be one that was well respected and looked up to as one of responsibility and accomplishments.
Now, even at the major level ,you are looked at by the public as an overpaid bus driver, and I'm not talking Airbus.
The guys walking around looking so disheveled, unkept, sporting backpacks, velcro shoes and worn out loafers and earbuds don't realize the image you are displaying to the flying public. The professionalism in this industry is long gone for the most part, but as far as I'm concerned, I will always display a crisp, clean image with appropriate luggage, shined shoes and clean, ironed uniforms.
It's just a personal preference, I would be ashamed to present myself to the public in any other way.

I really enjoyed seeing the Delta crew at the hotel last night. "Quadruple" breasted jacket, hat and along for the ride was his guitar on his back. I about laughed my ass off. There's something you don't see everyday.

You see more of them than you'd think. Must be a new trend.

As the tale of Delta Sea Admirals goes, carrying this lute will allow them to summon the mermaids of the air to protect them from light chop.

During one of my usual 4 hour sits in ORD, I got lunch and proceeded to the unofficial terminal 2 crew room (the connector between the E and F gates). I didn't pay attention to who I sat next to until the guy next to me in full uniform breaks out an acoustic guitar and starts jamming. I figured I could just eat my lunch quickly and distance myself, but then he had to start singing.

Yeah, because nothing says "lame" like using your overnights for something productive.

I don't own a long sleeve pilot shirt. My point is that a tie with a short sleeve shirt looks dumb, and no professional in any other line of work would ever wear that combo. People complain about the looks of a backpack, but our entire industry (outside of coat season) looks like a bunch of Dwight Shrutes wearing ties with short sleeved shirts and no one makes a peep. I wish we had rules like the military...either coat + tie, or short sleeve and no tie.

I have mastered nine skills,
I hardly forget the runes,
I am interested in books and carpentry,
I know how to ski,
my shooting and sailing skills are competent.
I can both play the harp and construe verse.-
Earl Rognvald Kali of Orkney
So, playing and singing were once signs of a gentleman. Now such skills are ridiculed? Perhaps these are the well rounded people that Delta is looking for?
