Wow this thread went 20 pages! It seems every so often this topic comes up in one form or another. And inevitably it turns into a huge back and fourth. It’s simple. If you want to tip and can afford it do so, hurray. If don’t want to or cannot then don’t. Either way it’s nobody’s business but your own. Make your own decisions and don’t take advice from an anonymous Internet forum.
It was interesting at my prior regional how many CAs didn't tip (while the FOs and FAs all did) but would also be up in arms when the van driver would care more about getting another airline's crew to the hotel a few minutes faster rather than wait for us to get curbside. Certain airlines have a reputation for crews not tipping. I wonder if we'd see an obvious breakdown if we knew who everyone in this thread worked for. |

That's the problem, it affects the service everyone else at your company gets as well.

Or not, it’s up to the individual. Not anyone else. Ever. |

I'll take "any country in Africa" for $200, Alex. I’ll take dictatorships for $800 Alex. |
So I had dinner at the MIA airport the other night, dinner for two. When the bill came the place automatically added a 15% gratuity. I gave them my credit card, to my surprise when it was time to sign they added an additional line for “tip”. Is this normal?
I felt like forcing me tip what they thought was fair was enough. To be honest, I was going to tip 20% but after seeing that automatically factored in, I left it at that. |

Tipping Van Drivers

. If something truly effected me this greatly, and tipping required such an ‘insignificant’ amount, I would always make sure they were compensated for those non-tippers. So when you see me (or any scum cheap pilot) not tip, and since $1-3 is nothing to you, go ahead and make us both happy, tip $1-3 more for my non-tip. That way I don’t have to listen to your judgmental nonsense, and you won’t get ‘negative’ service from the driver. It’s win-win! Same to celebrities telling us not to fly while they are on their private jet. You give up your income in place of taking mine, win-win

If only that were true. Personally I find that van drivers are more responsive to a crew being personable than whether or not you give them a lousy buck. Do you really think $3-$4 is really gonna sway a van driver? Or is it more likely that they will be swayed by someone genuinely interested in how there day is? More times than not, good crews end up forming good relationships with their drivers and know family names or hobbies and interests. Some drivers won’t even take the lousy buck, because the great conversations and laughs are where it’s at.

REALLY? Your arguments are childish at best. Tippers: CaRryInG bAgs oR bEiNg pROmpt iSnt PaRt ofTHeiR JoB DesCrIpRion. Non-tippers: *literal proof of job description with exactly that IN the job description* Tippers: YoU’rE ChiLdiSh. |
In our society you will be judged differently if you choose to tip or if you choose not to tip.
Arguing about why that should or shouldn’t be the case is silly. It’s a societal norm bigger than our professions or experiences. Decide how you want to be perceived and accept it for what it is. But it sure seems like trying to fight those perceptions with arguments and rationalizations more often than not proves the perceptions someone is trying to dispel. |

Obviously two different camps here and no one is changing anyone else’s mind. |
