Default Regional pilots living in NYC

I know a lot of NYC-based pilots are commuters, either jumpseating or driving in from the surrounding areas, but how many of you live/lived in the city itself? What neighborhoods do/did you live in? Do/did you rely on public transport, taxi/Uber, or did you have your own cars?

I'd be appreciative of any insight.

I don't think it's possible to live in NYC on a regional salary

I've already been living in nyc for the past 13 years. 2 years in the Bronx and 11 in Queens. Lived with my family (siblings, parents, cats) in a rented family home. We will buy a house here (Astoria, Queens) soon.

Had my own car for a while, yes

Sure, if you're indiscriminately spending. For those who know how to budget, NYC is absolutely possible.

Now saving money? That's a totally different story.

Ok so in order to live in NYC as a regional pilot your family has to support you.

So the answer is still no, regional pilots can’t afford to live in NYC, but thanks for trying.

Thats what I was thinking. It’s def possible to live in the suburbs of NYC. There’s apartments in NJ you can rent for less than 2K a month.

Living in NYC isn’t going to happen solo. You’ll need to be supported by your parents, a successful spouse or split costs with several roommates.

Exactly. My wife and I are getting by just fine, and she only works part time. We don't have a lot of extra, but we are and to afford what we need.

I'm the one who supports my family, not the other way around.

And I'm just answering OP's question.

Its not that hard to live in NYC with proper budgeting.

It’s going to be tricky on first year pay if you’re actually planning on living there, and living by yourself IMO. Crash pads and commuting is a different story.

If LGA/JFK is where you’ll be based you probably want to find something in Queens or Brooklyn or Western Long Island. I wouldn’t really do the Bronx (especially if you have to cover both airports). Manhattan really won’t be feasible. I don’t have enough experience with Staten Island to address it.

Either way, you’re going to probably have to give serious consideration to roommates and there’s good chance you’ll need more than one. You’re not going to get anything too fancy either. All of these ultramodern apartment complexes you see more and more of around the country won’t be a thing there.
