Uconn,

You are a smart and capable young man who is from a noteworthy university. Take your place among the rich and famous and find a fun and prosperous career. There is much more out there than just the cubicle. Aviation is mostly dead. Flying is fun therefore is seems like working as a pilot would be fun, but most of is not good at all. My theory is that people are attracted to aviation because they think that they are avoiding work.. Well that just isn't true. Go and get an airline job if you can. Suffer for a year or two and then get the heck out. Take lots of pictures and collect as many mementos as you can then find a real job. There are growing industries all around.

well there is a glimpse into a harsh reality... to be honest with you though, i cant forsee myself in an office at all

Well there are many other jobs out there. Pilots do well as Firefighters, Policemen, military, entrepreneurs and many other professions. And they all pay much better than flying.

I think that airlines like to hire these low time pilots because they are young, new and dont have the priorites as older people do. I may be wrong but maybe they see "new" guys as a way to exploit the system into yet lower payrates/benefits thereby reducing costs. I imagine that most people at 20-21 dont really care much about things like pay, benefits, let alone retirement!! At 21 its all about brag rights ( "Im A pilot!" ) rather than ( "Hey I get good benefits and can feed my family too!" ) - I was there too.
I mean - think about it! if you were running an airline wouldnt you want it this way?
You get all the benefits of having young employees - Low wages, Low benefit costs, and by the time they start thinking about retirement they are long gone doing something else.
Personally I don't see much change from this in the future, it seems almost as though the career of "Pilot" as we know it, is being dismantled.
Its Cheaper to Train'em than to keep'em! And lets face it - all this automation is making it much easier now more than ever - Really taking the pilot out of piloting. If anything we should want it to stay complex and challenging thereby keeping you as a valuable resource to the industry.

Nothing against young blood - I am too - just stating what I believe and the pill may be hard to swallow. I know i choked on it a few times -and it is similar to the experience of recieving a paycheck when I was flying the RJ.

Well, I'm over 30, and I have a family, so the 'young guy' thing doesn't apply. Our current 401(k) matches 100% up to 10%, so I would consider that a good benefit. Fair (not great) medical, dental, and vision coverage is provided. I make enough to feed my family, but my wife works too (by choice).
I just want people to know that some of us out here are happy. Maybe some of the jobs I had earlier in my life made it easier for me to appreciate my job, I don't know.

it is a surefire winner as far as forum threads go... guaranteed to generate a lot of negative critiques, especially since every pilot here hates flying and is miserable flying the best the world has to offer.. funny how that works...
