Comair/jfk cost of living
#21
I was wondering if there are any Comair pilots in here, particularly ones based out of JFK. I understand that most pilots get JFK but I was wondering how you afford to live there. I like Comair, and I think living in New York would be cool, but I’m not sure that I could afford to live there on starting FO pay.

Jfk is what it is...New York. There are plenty of options for crash pads there and many of the pilots will help you with information in giving info.including myself when you arrive. Typical crash pad price is from $200.00 to 350.00 avg being 230.00. Most in Kew Gradens.
As for schedulers, there are doing their jobs and many are new to their positions. They have lots of information they have to know or be aware of and just like pilots, contrary to belief, they do not know everything and do make mistakes, but so do we. As for being rude, personally, I have exp. maybe 1 or 2 a year but we all have bad days so maybe it was theirs. Treat them nice or with respect and most times you'll get the same in return. They are not there to be your friend per say but to do a job. This is my third airline and frankly I have no problems with them whatsoever. Am I happy with some of their decisions? Not always but thats the way it goes.
Rather than go into a speel on JFK ops or life there, I will gladly provide info via pm and provide true info if you wish. Good luck.

You will never be able to afford to live there on Comair pay. And what I mean is I call living being able to buy a house and have a life and not have to commute on my days off. Even on captains pay you could not afford to live there.
I call what we can do there is exist. You are just existing there until you can get time or seniority to move on. Can it be done on first year FO pay? Hardly but if you mooch off of family and friends and commute on you days off and crash pad the rest yes you can exist. You do qualify for food stamps and when you buy food in uniform you really get strange looks from the check out girls that probably make twice as much as you do.

3 things that I didn't expect to happen right after graduating from college...
1) Hired into a jet
2) Having 200 pilots hired right after me
3) Having 11 grand put into my 401k
I actually feel physically sick sometimes in the crew room when I hear new hires complain when senior captains are sitting nearby. I guess having to deal with JFK is part of me putting in "my time". So be it.
