tHEY WILL KEEP YOUR LAST PAYCHECK, and send you a bill, those bastards arent going to take you to court for it or bother you, I was sent a bill only after I asked them were my last paycheck was, then I never heard from them agian, and It was not sent to collections................My sister is an employment lawayer and it is not worth it, and by law they will have very little to stand on, you cant sue some people for the contract and not others and excpect to win..............They didnt sue me, and they will have little to stand on if they sue you, PM if you have any questions..................

Is there any way that defaulting on the training contract follows you around in the airline industry? Colgan might not be able to get the money back from you in court, but could it show up in your employee file somewhere that then gets sent (or verbally told) to another airline that might be doing an employment background check?
Or, worse yet, if Colgan were to turn it over to a collection agency, it could show up in your credit report, which then follows you forever. Want to buy a house sometime? I think I read somewhere else on this forum that at least one airline might be doing credit checks on potential employees too.
Point is, you took their training, don't you then owe your end of the contract? I think I've read on here a number of times that Colgan didn't have the best work environment, so it wasn't like you didn't know.

Talked to a lawyer who is a friend of my parents and the training contracts you sign are not enforceable. It is a scare tatic to keep you there, if you are required for legal reasons (FAA required) to go through company specific training for a job then they can not legally make you pay for that training. Especially if you are on probationary terms (normally that first year), if they don't need a reason to fire you then you don't need a reason to quit. Also unless they are going after every single pilot who quit before you, then the case will get thrown out the minute it gets put on a judges desk. One last thing no collection agency would ever touch that kind of collection, way to much legal trouble enforceing them. Now to the moral aspect, be prepared to answer about your reasoning for quiting, years down the road at a interview, dont think that major HR rep doesn't know about colgans training contract. So be careful don't burn them bridges.

I agree with 172 above... they probably wouldnt try to enforce it, but it could possibly haunt you down the road. Maybe not..but maybe, like he said, be prepared to answer for it down the road, probably when you least expect it.

I know there have been a few people that have left and nothing has happened to them. I also know of people that have gone onto places like Continental and it was not an issue. My big thing is that it’s putting a strain on my relationship with my fiancée/wife in October. That’s way more important to me than having to any job. I mean if I have to pay it back it will suck, but it's no where near worth our relationship. Not to mention the other things like crew scheduling, getting paid for things that are supposedly guaranteed in the crew manual, and most of all crappy MX.

You are totaly right about your relationship though. Expect to loose your last check so just quit on the spot. No sense in giving them two weeks that they are going to keep anyway.
Best..

Well heres food for thought, in XJT the CA interviewing me said this, "Yeah any airline that has a training contract is not a good place to work". They know why people leave places like COLGAN their not stupid guys..........
