I prefer a white scarf as opposed to a tie. It drapes nicely over my leather bomber jacket and accents my goggles nicely. Of course, I just wear all that when I'm instructing. It let's the student know they're flying around in that 172 with a real professional!

Ties are okay for about an hour...two is the max though. They suck for everyday wear. I'm a fan of knowing how to make a tie look sharp (i.e. tie your own) but I just hate wearing them for very long.
