So again, spend 2 years at Big Sky getting lots of 1900 PIC time or spend 2 years at Jet Airline A getting jet SIC and hoping for a quicker upgrade than everone else because you didnt get hired with 400/50 and still waiting to meet ATP mins....

XJET's upgrade is NOT around 18 months right now. Hasn't been since pre-9/11. And isn't expected to drop that low for quite some time.

Also, everybody seems to be omitting a little thing. Besides having the PIC, you need to make contacts. 10,000 PIC is great, but if you don't know anybody, it might not matter so much. FedEx, SW, etc have plenty of guys that had nothing but TP PIC time.

Also, MESABA!! Upgrade times are quick!

who knows anymore, just pick a plane and fly it till the wheels fall off

which with the q wont take any time at all :P

Who? How do you define many? I can think of one.

For this reason, I would be wary of taking a job at a company that only operates small t-props (like 1900's) with the intent of getting 1000 PIC and moving on to the majors...you are far more likely to find yourself moving on to a jet regional in 3-4 years If you have a solid connection at the major of your choice, this plan might work but what if you bomb the interview?
Not at all the case from what I've seen at my company.

Start in the prop, upgrade, get your 1000 TPIC, and try to get that major job. If it doesn't work out, then transition to the jet to get some glass/jet time.
Sounds like a SkyWest endorsement...no surprise there. I do agree that they are a great company, though.

Rick, I normally agree with your posts, but think you need to check your facts on this one. As for the OP, go chase that 1000 TPIC asap. It's the road less traveled, but if you truly want to hit it big, you gotta start at square one.

Here is a list of regionals that fly tprops that i hear a better percentage of good comments over bad ones

American Eagle
Mesaba
Skywest
HORIZON
Piedmont
ASA

There are probably a few I missed and all are open to personal oppinions and each of the above listed airlines has its problems but IMO none of them are bottom feeders and fall into the categories you listed.

A turboprop is not a sacrifice or a death sentence, its just a different path. Especially with some of the newer turboprops out there we are not thought of as lesser beings because we dont cruise at FL300+
That was my point. I'm gaining a clearer picture as to just how this industry operates within all of its cyclical ups & downs. For example, I now realize and understand that even though with the rise in mandatory retirement age may lengthen one's career, that one of the trade offs will defintely be longer upgrades. Exactly when that will have an impact, I don't know. However it would be interesting to be able to measure all of the jockeying and repositioning of personal strategies when that impact materalizes.

I understand that in a year, 2 years, etc that could change to some unknown whatever but if have to get 'stuck' at some regional i would think sitting around in a jet waiting for an upgrade or an interview would be a better life.

The DAL published mins apply only to legacies or those with VERY good connections through friends. Otherwise, plan on needing TPIC.

PIC time will always reign over SIC. As long as the plane is burning JET-A I don't see any difference between a Turboprop or a Jet. Personally, I think people who jump straight to the barbie jet are missing out on alot of fun flying, but thats just me!

Just cause colgan doesn't have a contract doesn't mean we don't have work rules get your facts straight

PIC time. I've heard it's actually harder to fly a turboprop rather than a jet especially the CRJ -The stick and rudder skills that you get to maintain flying the 1900 kick ass....my 2 cents

im not even going to justify that with a response

However I do find it funny that people who don't even work here think they know the inner workings of the company
