I see a very small affect for the first few years. Most pilots 58-59 have been ready to retire for a while and probably ready to get out, the light at the end of the tunnel syndrome . I wonder how many will say "lets do it 5 more" now that they can.

"Light at the end of the tunnel" is not a reference to old people seeing the light when they die. We all love our old experience pilots.

doesnt matter that they have been ready to retire for a while. many will keep flying at least till they start collecting social security because a) "they can" and b) we americans are workaholics, as seen in a lot of pilots desire to hore themselves out and fly overtime to max their pay.

I ::expletive deleted:: myself out to extra flying in great part just to pay the bills on first-year pay...gotta be a workaholic when they pay in peanuts and coke (if you're lucky!).

not criticizing anyone for horing themselves out, just pointing out the workaholic nature of a lot of pilots. if youre doing it to supplement 1st year pay now, think about how much better it will be when you hore yourself out on 2nd year pay. and thats how the addiction begins.

now picture yourself as a 60 year old captain at the top of the payscale. pick up a couple extra trips here and there, hey this isnt so bad why not do it till 65

If anyone is counting on social security when they retire, they are in a world of hurt.

Also, I try and pick up extra time not cause I love working more but I need
a) MONEY as a FO we are not the highest paid around
b) HOURS so I get upgrade quicker so I can make more of (see letter 'a' above)

Most older pilots I know do not want to fly a bunch of overtime to max their pay. Instead they use their seniority to bid reserve lines that they will never be called on because they are so senior.

Let's just hope these jokers don't succeed:

age60rule.com

Age 65 wasn't good enough for these guys, so they're going to court to try overturning the current rule to put in a new one that's retroactive to the ICAO rule change in Nov. 2006, giving retroactive reinstatement to any pilot who hit 60 before the Oberstar rule was passed. That might cause some problems for us younger pilots if they somehow pulled it off.

Personally, I hope they succeed in getting Age 65 overturned in court, and that the courts send it back to Congress, and that Congress fails to re-pass it with the retroactivity the senior pilot's/whatever they're called group want.
