ERA Bankruptcy

Ok everyone, put away the sharp sticks and play nice. Personally, I think the ERA guys are going to get screwed whether or not the airline stays afloat. I have friends over there, and I am worried about them. Pilots all over the country are laughing at the guy marching next to them that just fell off the cliff. There is a reason pilots are abused. We don't give a damn about the other guy, and will do anything to climb the ladder. On the other hand, Tuff, open your eyes. Management doesn't give a damn about you or your career. They are in this business to line their pockets. That isn't personal, just business.

Alright, enough about business. That's for the lawyers, Landis and Danny to figure out.
Let get to heart of this.
Why wouldn't PenAir want a Dash 8? It is a much better aircraft to operate in the state of Alaska. I'll put overall operation of a Dash 8 up against a Saab anyday. There is a reason you guys are getting them for so cheap; no one else wants them. The Saab may cruise a little faster, but the Dash can approach at much slower speeds, land in much shorter field lengths, and land with 20 knots on the tail. Bump up to the -200, and now it can keep up with the Saab. Move up to the -400 and it can match the AS jet to almost any destination in the state.
Okay, so maybe you have a low-wing, and look pretty. Isn't that just jet-envy?
Maybe we should open this to the entire regional thread.

PenAir wouldn't want Dash 8's because it would be much easier to get a couple more SAABs. Fewer parts to stock, fewer crew and mechanic training issues, etc. It is easier to have fewer types of aircraft. Also, those Dash8's probably smell like ERA pilots

keep the snide remarks to yourself
those ERA guys may be sitting in the same cockpit with you very shortly
SAAB's are very economical to buy and operate thats why PenAir has them
nothing against the dash 8 I am sure it is a fine aircraft
hope this speculation ends soon one way or the other

Fewer crews???
What are you guys doing, flying those things single pilot?
The only series Dash that requires more than 1 FA is the Q400. Oh, but imagine what a machine it would be with only fifty seats.
I know that you guys are getting a good deal on the Saabs, but my point is that the short performance field of the Dash would open up more destinations and allow for better fleet commonality given that all four variants fall under the same type.

Shorter t/o = more cost / seat mile. And how often does your short performance pay off for ya? More fuel used, and for what. Anything needing SHORT field is a nitch market. And like you guys, anthing that is a small market gets a small plane w even shorter t/o performance. You use the twatter for your nitch market. We got saratoga, navaho, 1040, caravan, goose for our nitch markets. Try takeing that dash or twatter to Akutan. Shure, your short field performance might help you land, but I would like to see you take off again without your floties. And where do you use your short field capabilities??? ENA??? oooh, big money maker there.
