And mostly, it's not when things are really wild and blustery. Those times, it seems you make the best landings--it's when you least expect it...

Man, I hear ya. When its 30 gusting to 40, fighting all the way in, I can just paint those wheels onto the pavement but then on a clear, calm morning without a ripple, airplane trimmed and on speed to basically hands off all the way in and then PRANG...

I heard a story once (third or fourth hand) about a really hard landing that had the passengers whispering and asking if that was normal. The aircraft pulled off the runway and stopped for a minute or so. The co-pilot came on the intercom and announced that he was responsible for that less than smooth landing and ended by saying [you might have guessed that for the last 10 years I have been doing this on an aircraft carrier]. The story goes that the cabin broke out in laughter and some passengers even took the time to talk to the pilot as they were deplaning. Good way to end an uneasy situation I thought.

My favorite was a leg to Charlotte when the CA smacked it on he said, "take that Charlotte!"

A long time ago when I really did a bad job with a crosswind a nice little old lady deplaning said, "The pilot needs to learn how to land". She looked so sweet too. The CA was laughing about it for the rest of the trip. After a few positive compliments from pax on later landings and some therapy I got over it.

We've all had landings where you thought the wings fell off. They happen, drive on, land better next time.

One passenger made a comment when deplaning. Feeling pretty bad about this, anyone had the same thing happen? I know no one will fly perfect all the time, but man, that was terrible.

yes twice... once with a CHQ jumpseater, once with a Delta jumpseater......... haha

If you feel bad about you landings and cant overcome it, just go and jumpseat on a Q400 flight. You'll feel much better after that, thrust me

Saab 340 into CHO about 2 years ago. Just finished IOE and it was my first night landing with heavy rain, fog, and a xwind. The lights were full bright and the runway isn't that long. I flew the approach almost to mins and never flaired! Ive never seen a Saab bounce, but it did that night. The captain couldn't stop laughing all the way into the crew room and starting calling me "crash" for the longest time!

We really do need to test the integrity of the runway surface from time to time.
