For 2008 new-hires...

Very well said! Some people on here seem to go around constantly p-ssed off about professional aviation. Why do you want to do that to yourself? Life is way too short to go around miserable all the time. If you hate flying so much, go do something that makes you happy. Leave flying to the rest of us insane nuts who are crazy enough to hang on, enjoy the ride and have fun!
Fly happy bros and sis's -- does wonders for your attitude!

Well said. Get out of aviation if you hate life.

The initial post did come off as a little "bitter"....If a person got hired at a bottom feeder regional with super low time in 2008, then some might call them "lucky", we all know there is more than just luck though to break into this industry, and there will be more than just "luck" to get you to move up to the next level. If the regionals slow down this year, then they do, things are going to be changing over the next few months, and watching oil prices and what the majors do will give us some clue as to what we can expect on this level as well. For all we know, a year from now, all the regionals will be over-staffed because of a massive reduction in flying. Reserve times at all regionals will stretch out to years, upgrades will be indefinite, and growth at the majors will come to a halt, if so, the guy who stuck around and instructed for a couple more months, might have been doing it for a couple more years, and it'll serve them well, as they'll need everyone of thse hours to be competitive.
Here's the only thing though that anyone actually does know. The future isn't set, no-one has a crystal ball, and all we can do is roll with the punches, so just hang out and keep flying.

Plan on flying very little this year at the regionals.
Reserve times at most companies are getting longer due to the slowdown in movement.
If you are a low time pilot that is "lucky" enough to get hired this year, ask yourself how will you feel a year from now when you only added 200 to 300 hours to your logbook, while the "unlucky" pilot that did not get hired builds time faster, probably got paid better, and slept in his/her house every night.
Just something to consider.

Why is it every time I get on here and someone is making a prediction they are all so damn negative? No one on here has a real clue as to what is going to happen. For all we know OPEC could decide to boost production and drop oil to $70 a barrel and life will be great again (probably not, but we can dream right?)....
Why dont we TRY to keep a positive attitude?

To be honest, I wake up everyday, and say "Man I wish I could fly today."
How many people started flying because they love it? I hope most of you can say yes to that.
I know that when I start flying as a career ( sometime around Nov of this year) The life is going to be hard. Ill make less money as a pilot, than I do as a rampie for AE. Ill not be at home very often, and I will live out of a suitecase.
With all that being said, I KNOW, exactly what I am getting into.
We all do.
So lets look at the Sunny Side. We do fly... Not everyone can say that.

My airline is hiring. He's got good advice though, with more people staying away from the airlines means more/better jobs for us!
