Default CRJ basese for skywest

Can someone that knows tell me where the junior bases are for CRJ FO and what are the chances of getting SLC or FAT out of class.

Out of class? Not a chance...expect ORD...it used to be MKE but I think there are enough displacements to knock it down from most junior base (?) Recently as things have been filling in and slowing down, new-hires were even getting COS/DEN after just a month or so, then the likes of FAT and SLC soon thereafter.

Also, it's worth noting that SLC, DEN, and ORD are where the vast majority of system-wide reserves are placed...

Junior CRJ = ORD

It used to be MKE, but not sure that midwest will still be in business the next time we run CRJ classes.

The way things look now, you would not get either SLC or FAT out of training, but SLC is so large that anythings possible when the time comes.

Well, since we're not currently running RJ (or EMB for that matter) classes it's truly hard to tell you any exact information. All I can say is that when we do start running RJ New Hire classes in......................oh...................say.. ...........2009+, anything can and will happen. We could end up with new flying which will add bases and shift pilots but more than likely we’ll be filling the small gaps between transitioning EMB FO’s and our future needs. That means you’ll probably end up in ORD for the better part of a year or more and you’ll be on reserve the entire time as well as once you transfer. In other words, if you want SLC or FAT CRJ the first chance you can get it then look forward to 1-2 years on reserve and a 3+ to 4 year upgrade (mainly due to the fact that you won’t fly much on reserve, therefore it will take you longer to build the min requirements for upgrade).

I was in the aug 4 emb class but was put in the pool. I was given a choice between the jet and the emb and at the time thought Its better to take a class rather then swim in a pool for the crj. Now im in a pool anyway but my question is do you think the emb class will start up before a crj class. Also, whats the apprx reserve time in the emb.

Thanks in advance.

ABSOLUTLY, without a doubt and no question about it!

We will run EMB classes LONG before we ever run a CRJ class and when they do run RJ classes look for them to contain only 5 or so new hires with the majority being transitioning EMB FO's. When this happens they will also run EMB New Hire classes to back fill the transition FO's and the EMB class will contain 4 times the number of new hires that are in the RJ class. Plus the EMB FO's might sit reserve for 1-3 months at most, unlike their RJ brethren. After all, we are still short staffed on EMB FO's and we’re well staffed on RJ FO's.

I wouldn't be surprised if they run 2 New Hire EMB classes by the end of the year, I actually expect it.

So are there two seperate pools, one for crj and one for emb? If one has choosen to wait in the crj pool can they switch to the emb?

Jet Jock, what's you guess on the earliest emb class?

I have a friend here now who was in the pool for the CRJ and he called and asked for the EMB and got a class. So I would say you can definetly ask for the Bro class.

Yes, you can switch to the EMB but I don't think they will keep you in both pools at once.

As for my "guess" when the next EMB class will be............I think they will run a Sept or Oct and Nov class. We need about another 20 or so EMB FO's in order to bring them up to adequate staffing, add to that a low attrition rate and you're probably talking 25-30 guys by years end with another 50-80 by next summer.

This is just an educated guess using our current staffing and flying levels.

We are staffed very well on the RJ and if we completely lose Midwest (which I see coming in early 09) that would put another 80 or so crews into the DAL/UAL system (it will take a lot more than losing Midwest for SKW to furlough). Add attrition to the mix and I wouldn’t be surprise if it’s the 2nd Q of 09 or LATER before they run another RJ New Hire class.

My advice is to always take the EMB. You'll make $5-10K more seeing that you'll actually be flying with line values in the upper 80 and low 90's (just holding a line on first year pay can mean an extra $800+ per month; that's around 15-25 hours extra @ $22 plus $500 or so in per diem) as compared to sitting on your ass on the RJ (75 hours @ $22 with only $100-$150 in per diem per month). You'll also be moving up the EMB FO list as those in front of you transition over to the RJ or upgrade (greatly improves you Quality Of Life and helps you deal with the first year regional woes) whereas on the RJ you will continually be pushed back on the list as EMB FO's who are senior to you transition over. There aren't too many things more depressing than seeing yourself move up then down the list as others more senior to you transition over in front of you while you wonder if you’ll EVER get the sniff of a line.

A buddy of mine was hired on the RJ last November in ORD, has NEVER BROKEN GUARANTEE (the most he’s ever flown in one month here at SKW on the RJ is 34 hours) and is still 17 guys away from an off peak line and 2 away from a peak line. He’ll hit 2nd year pay before he ever gets a sniff of a line and he’s in our most JR domicile.
