So for all of our downgrades, lineholders that went to reserve and commuters that dont want second jobs on our days off (we all know how valuable those are)... most of you are saying its not fair for them to make some extra money to support their lifestyles... Our 1.5 SDO pay is a huge perk in our contract and it is something we should take advantage of IF you chose to do so.
I'll pick up time or trip trade to raise my credit if i have to without question. I think its great for the captains that want that 1000 PIC or people that have families/investments... How can u all be upset at the hard workers looking to support, our reserves arent flying even close to guarantee and until that happens there is no call back in sight... I'll bet also that when we do call back, those FO's will be looking to fly and doing whatever they can to get the most time in.
People donate when they have something to give, when u are living pay check to pay check you at this point and time you have to start tightening down and looking out for yourself. Its a competitive industry.
If you're taking this personally, you have issues.

So you're another PSA pilot who is/would pick up open time? You just aren't able to grasp what is at stake either, and thinking reserves are SUPPOSED to fly.
TK & KH are sitting in their cozy little villas by the fireplace laughing all the way to the bank because people are picking up open time.

as a former regional puke, I think it is laughable for the philosophers, idealogues, and self righteous prics to start babbling...really insano,
you're a socialist... and a lousy christmas card writer... you sure spread the cheer..
Look, sure you're furstrated, but if you think for one minute that your preaching can rally all of the selfish, flying *****s, no life piloting, spiked hair, ipod back pack toting, long sideburned, gelled hair wearin, egotistical, mommy, look at me (I've made it in my career), regional pilots, then you're sadly mistaken.
anyone who is a decent human being would never pick up an hour of open time

Yeah, sure would pick it up. I never said reserve were SUPPOSED to fly, i said they dont fly. The reserves want to fly. If they arent flying then there is no reason for the call backs until they do start flying unfortunately. At one point there was only 113 hours of open time for FO's (i dont look at the captains)... spread that over the 40ish reserves we have... Dont see an opportunity to bring even one guy/gal back with that... Good luck with your lil movement here, let us know how it pans out.

As much as I hate to see guys on the street, there is no way of understanding everybody's personal financial situation. My fiance and I were doing just fine financially, until she was laid off from her job with little to no warning. That, along with the fact that I am now back on reserve with 30 hours block for the month of december, min guarantee just doesn't do it when we were living on dual income. So, like I said I don't like to see guys on the street, but family has to come first. If there's open time, and a chance to credit 1.5 above monthly guarantee, I'm picking it up to feed the family.
I hope to see everybody on furlough recalled soon, and I may be doing my part in the future as I'm taking the air traffic control test next week. So if I end up leaving this profession all together, I'd say the few months that I picked up open time while guys were on the street will be offset by that.
Fly safe and have a great new year everyone!

Just checkin.
I've for the most part kept my mouth shut, and I'm in most cases a very reasonable guy but I'll go one further than everyone else. If you haven't been furloughed, you really don't get an opinion. I was lucky, I had money saved and I've got another flying job now but not everyone is so lucky. There are guys I worked with that are now working at walmart and fast food chains to pay their bills. Those guys had flying jobs before they went to the airline, those jobs have evaporated now. I had never been unemployed since high school before my furlough, you just literally can't understand what it is without doing it yourself.
Ok so the reserves aren't flying.... is this more of less likely to change when people pick up open time? If I were a reserve right now I'd be begging people not to pick up open, if they fly close to reserve their jobs are safe. If they fly 30 hours a month, how long will it be before the company reduces staffing agian?
There's always going to be the jerk who's out for himself, that doesn't make it right. People have an underdeveloped sense of shame.

Ok, so from that point of view how would you feel if the reason she got laid off was one of her coworkers said they'd be willing to do her work. Lets say she worked 40 hours a week and two of her coworkers said, yea we'll both work 20 hours extra... that pretty cool with you?
What if that was the case... I applaud this guy for giving his full support in this situation! Is he not supposed to feed the family now because the company overstaffed and flow through never happened???

We have had some layoff's at head office as well. But i'm sure that there are others that are picking up the slack. The work still has to get done. T.K. isn't going to bring back the F/O's till mainline gives us back some more flying. Regardless of wether or not people are picking up SDO. If you think that SDO has any effect on bringing back the furloughes you are mistaken. The best way to bring them back is to have attrition at PSA. If people quit they need to be replaced. IMO.

That's business. Times get tough and management reduces labor to cut costs. Management has always spread work around to increase productivity. Business 101. Don't make it personal.

SDO = Open Time. No need for the fancy scheduled day off acronym, it's open time. Go pickup some more open time. Whether you are a captain, with downgraded captains waiting to get back into their left seat, or an FO who just received a relatively large pay increase, picking up open time hurts the pilot groups position as a whole.
You can say it, open time, stop trying to rationalize it. Try to think for the future, instead of the measly gains you can make right now. As a pilot group we collectively need to work together, especially because of the contract negotiations coming up.
You're either with the good of the pilot group, or against it. Too much selfish behaviour, and we all fail. Your work rules, QOL, and pay is negotiated by a COLLECTIVE GROUP of pilots. It's NOT all about you, as much as you want to believe it is.
I fear the unions hand is being held back in fear of reprisal on the part of management crying foul, and illegal job action, similar to that which happened to United Pilots over the summer. We need unity, fly the contract, no open time, no answering for junior mans, and no going outside the contract THINKING you are HELPING.
Everything anyone does fly outside the contract means the company has enough SUCKERS who will do more, for less, and leave pilots out of work.
How many times, can all of this be said, in one thread, by so many?

This subject is truely beatin to death, althought there are alot of good perspectives by way of both parties.
Insano, if didnt want people to retort then what is point of your post, just venting?
On another note there are people on this forum who live at home with their parents and are on here telling others how to manage their finances, you are way out of line folks.
Also many claim to be die hard union supporters, while in front of their PC but how many of you used your day off to nonrev to milwaukee for informational picketing with Midwest pilots. Whats happening to those folks is unethical at best. Use your enthusiasm for something more constructive then bashing your fellow pilots
