This one is really weird...
Cruising at FL340 late yesterday center comes on and asks do we need to descend to FL240.
Ummm...no, not that we are aware of?
Then center says that all CRJ200's operated by these companies (lists most of them) are now restricted to FL240 due to extreme cold at altitude...
We were in relatively warm air, nothing too cold for the flaps. We sent a text to company, no response. Started the descent (we were about there anyway) and landed normally.
No emails, haven't heard anything about this...anyone know what's up?

Right, but we knew about that and were not really that close to -60C. But what does that have to with FL240 and when did ATC start dictating our operating procedures? Was there some kind of FAA emergency order? You'd think they would have told us by now.

That is weird they would do that, the -60c is all thats in the books for operating the plane... I had a friend tell me that the midwest had altitudes below -60c a few days ago... if thats worth anything...

FL240 just might have been significantly warmer....why ATC felt the need to delagate orders? Who knows....
Ill tell ya what....I can pretty much bet none of our dispatchers would have caught that

seems a little odd for ATC to jump in like that, the 145 has a couple temperature limitations, but we weren't really close to any of them the other day. It was dang cold though, -50's if memory serves me right, at around 37k feet.

There is a -60C limitation for those CR2's that DO NOT have the latest flap S/B complied with. I know at 9E there are still just a few in the fleet that do not comply. There was a changeover in a certain flap part that supposedly was not changed (on the assembly line) until the last XXX airframes. 9E has most of the last ones (newest) so most already have the part, otherwise they have to be replaced on the older airframes or not operate in temps colder than -60C.
Clear as mud?

With the cold weather a lot of companies have seen a dramatic rise in flap failures so to reduce the delays and cancelations associated with the flap failures dispatch has been filing us at lower altitudes. They are willing to burn more gas over the costs of the flap failures.
