I dont think you really can justify Riddle... I remember it was expensive as HE!! when I was there and the education quality was over rated at best..... Bottom line when ever someone asks me what the best path to a career in aviation is the first thing I tell them is go to a state school and get your bachelors for cheap and at very least a decent quality education over all... Also get a biz or egr degree that way you have something to fall back on if the med somehow disappears..... and then go the FBO route get your ratings on the weekend or evenings or whatever and CFI / 135 for a bit you will be money education and respect ahead in the end and I also tell them what ever you do "dont become a god D@MN academy puke" man I hate those BA$TARD$........ pay for your job what a crock.... Plus I would like to see one of them get a job aside from burger world once they are furloughed since most of the academy guys I have meet have never been to college or anything else for that matter. Bottom line, regular 4 year education combined with FBO is the only thing that can be justified.

Don't you guys have disability insurance? If something happens to my medical, I'll just retire and still get 66 2/3% of my pay (tax free) till I'm 65!

rickair777,
Very well put in response to pay history. I've been reading these boards for months now and have a much better sense of the regional industry as a result of the posts like yours and others on here with a lot of experience. Eight or nine months ago, I had no idea what mgt/labor relations were like at the regional level or why (a question that will be persued for a long time it seems). I also had no idea how big the pay cut facing me is going to be. Now I know how to plan and what to plan for. As a military helo pilot with some mulit-time and a few years left on my first hitch, the regional world was a mystery to me. The experiences pilots share here are very helpful to those at any stage in their flying, but especially to the ones trying to break in to the business. This has allowed me to know how to maneuver in the future regarding which regional, why, and what to consider. I think people get too wrapped around the axle with who's school is better and how much it costs, or which non-flying job is better and how much more money can be made doing it. The focus should be on always learning the trade (past, present, future), getting hired, and GETTING PAID (properly) to FLY aircraft...oh yeah, quality of life is in there too.
Keep up the good posts. Education is key.

College pave's the road for some...And some pave their own roads...I'm a 40 year old DC-10 captain...No college...BUT!...I also own, owned and sold several corporations outside of aviation...I don't have any company officers with NO college education...Go to college...if you have the time or money...If you don't...Go into business for yourself...You will never get rich working for someone else....Business ownership is a 24/7 deal...Most people don't have that drive...Cheers
