Eagle News

It seems as if things have been pretty quiet lately regarding AE. Just wondering if there has been any new news regarding displacements, vacancies, CRJ options, furloughing, hiring, ect?

kfour 03-21-2009 02:33 PM

Tons of rumors, ranging from hiring in the fall to furloughing. Absolutely nobody knows whats going on. Recently, there was a displacement/vacancy bid to move crews to the ATR for some increased flying hours but that flying "did not materialize". I had been displaced to SJU in that bid. Now they've canceled it and here we are, today, having no idea whats coming up next.

withthatsaid182 03-21-2009 04:30 PM

All has been quiet...I think everywhere has the furlough rumor lately. I think it will be a couple of months before we see something major happen.

Randolph 03-21-2009 05:12 PM

Hopefully we'll find out in the next few weeks when Eagle attends the SAMA conference for UND's students/alum on April 17th. The flyer states that they will be interviewing on site....pilots? Who knows.

WmuGrad07 03-21-2009 06:57 PM

Even if they interview there is a pool, and people on LOA's... not to mention all the bad news going around seem more likely than hiring.

withthatsaid182 03-22-2009 01:17 PM

Eagle is not going to hire until we see some growth. And at this point any growth would be a re-increase in flying to our previous levels. So I guess that's not growth then. With the summer coming it seems like a good time to bulk up on pilots to cover summer fllying but it appears we are overstaffed as it is. If anything we will be able to cover the summer flying then go back to being overstaffed in the fall.

Everyone I run into claims a class is starting "next month". I've also heard that ever since last fall. I really think the most likely scenario's for Eagle are:

1) They hang onto everyone for now and reevaluate things month to month and use part/zero time lines, LOAs to get by.

if that doesn't work

2) They will furlough to satisfy staffing needs for the reduction in flying.

3) I haven't come up with a 3rd scenario I'm sure we can all be pretty creative.

Flyby1206 03-22-2009 05:03 PM

3) They furlough and hire at the same time- because it makes no sense and thats the AMR-way! ;)

eaglefly 03-22-2009 05:09 PM

Rumor mill is hot about acquiring more 70-seat CRJ's, but parking a greater number of 37/44 seat EMB's for a net loss of aircraft and need for pilots. The "F" word is floating around quite seriously since attrition is slow.

Stay tuned.

Did you see the ALPA schedule for the meeting on April 9th?

Topic #9 was overstaffing/furlough update.

Sounds ominous.

RJ Pilot 03-23-2009 09:57 AM

They know something we dont know obviously!

Last vacancy displacement bid was cancelled.

CRJ options- positive ruling CRJ award pdf - Home

Hiring? Claudette just emailed me yesterday, "Looks like it's going to be awhile before we do any more pilot hiring."

Furlough? The rumor is always there in times like these.

RJ Pilot 03-23-2009 11:20 AM

Rumor anywhere from 100-200 furloughs.

BURflyer 03-23-2009 12:25 PM

Even if you make it to eagle you still have the 12 year upgrade to think about. I would just join the AF or the reserves.

MAXforwardspeed 03-23-2009 01:23 PM

I think AE will show some movement but it won’t be until American Airlines finishes contract negations with AA pilots. I don’t think we will be hiring in 2009. It’s possible that pilots swimming in the pool or from a canceled class might get called back. I would venture a guess that 2010 will show hiring like 2007 and 2008.

Eagle is also suspending service to DAL so the new cities are probibly just the reallocation of that metal.

There is no meeting on the 9th. There is a MEC meeting on the 21th.

I would say 100 at the most if any. 200 would put every RSV from JFK EMJ, ORD CRJ, DFW ATR, and most of ORD EMJ on the street.

Who knows how they do what they do. That's probably the first email I've read in the last 6 months from ALPA - so I guess I just got lucky!

Fellow DFW Pilots,

It has come to our attention that a furlough of some of our fellow Eagle pilots may be imminent. At present we do not know how many pilots will be furloughed. We do know that management hopes to make a decision within the next few days. Recently, Eagle management indicated that they believe our airline is “over staffed” by as many as 130 pilots. We feel that for the first time in a long time, staffing levels are finally what they should be in the jets! ATR staffing in DFW continues to be a disaster!

Doug and I also question the financial responsibility of furloughing pilots, training replacements generated by a displacement bid, and the retraining of returning furloughed pilots! The cost of retraining these pilots and maintaining staffing levels must be explained, especially if additional ATRs and/or CRJs are to arrive on property.

Sadly, if your Eagle seniority finds you on the bottom 100, please prepare yourselves for possible furlough. It is our sincere hope that management’s actions won’t cut this deep. Although we don’t have many answers at this time, we felt it was incumbent on us to give you as much heads-up as possible. If you have any questions, please contact the MEC office at 817.685.7474 or either Val Jester or Doug Gibbs.

Respectfully,

Val Jester, Chairman
EGL Council 83

Doug Gibbs, Vice Chairman

I'm sorry to hear that. Hopfully they cancel it or reduce the furlough. What is your DOH?

Good luck everyone

kfour 03-26-2009 08:53 AM

If they furlough 1 person, I have no job.

Heh.

Superpilot92 03-26-2009 08:54 AM

always hate to see news like this, Good luck guys!

maveric311 03-26-2009 09:04 AM

OH GREAT. hold on everyone! DOH 1/21/08 216 below me. looks like I might be spared but who knows for how long.

TBucket 03-26-2009 09:07 AM

Not that it's any consolation, but at TSA our furloughs go back to 4/07... You guys are still doing alright! I hope none of you guys has to get hit. We don't need any more good pilots on the street.

3/3/08 date of hire.

withthatsaid182 03-26-2009 10:04 AM

Man, I just wish I didn't have to go to recurrent next week. It's going to be hard to stay focused.

We're lucky at Eagle to have been spared the dagger for this long. Let's hope that it only lasts a short while.

coldpilot 03-26-2009 10:10 AM

2/18/08 DOH. 130 furloughs will put me less than 30 from the bottom.

withthatsaid182 03-26-2009 10:22 AM

Now...

Will this happen before or after the summer? With the increased flying during the summer season would it make sense to wait til' September?

Why don't they just displace NY FOs to Dallas ATR?

Because with EMJ/CRJ displacements in DFW the ATR went more senior?

coldpilot 03-26-2009 10:28 AM

ATR staffing is a mess right now but there are still at least 20 FO's and 20 CA's that haven't finished training. I have been saying for at least the last 3 weeks that I thought furloughs were going to be coming soon. ATR reliability is waaay down (thanks to a few CAs that write up ridiculous crap). One ATR had 5 air interrupts in a week (DFW ATR guys know what I'm talking about). I think ATR block hours in DFW are going to be cut because it hasn't been as reliable in DFW as it is in SJU and MIA. Some of the write-ups are legit and others are just pure BS. That's my .02.

If the Captian can write it up, he has a responsibility to do so. We have gotten so used to "failed in flight" that we are losing sight of what should be done. I flew with said captain and every write-up while trivial was definitely legit. If it is nothing then maintenance will close with a "noted" or something like that. If we don't write all these little things up they add up to make a day's worth of maintenance. Not to mention the lives put to risk for some of these write-ups. I don't want to start a fight in any means, just stating my perspective on passenger safety. I hope all ends well with this "imminent furlough".

I don't see how putting an aircraft down for over 2 hours for something like a missing window shade will put lives at risk. I'm all for writing something up that is going to affect passenger safety but we're getting a little ridiculous with some of this stuff. I've had some pretty jacked up stuff like bleed leaks and faults in flight. Had another plane that started acting like 545 last night. That's fair game. Pax service and convenience items can wait for another day. That's the thing about Captain's discretion, sometimes you really gotta pick your battles. With the environment we are in right now it requires a bit more discretion.

They are probably new captains scared of the FAA!

He isn't a new CA. I'm not going to say much else. If you've flown with him you know who he is.

I don't think I worded my thoughts correctly. SOME write-ups put lives a risk, some put your cert. at risk. Window shades are a perfect example. Have to be written up, but wouldn't hurt anybody to leave it broke. Blame the FAA not the crew. They were doing what was necessary to stay out of trouble. Sorry I didn't word that correctly, my bad. They are silly write-ups in the end.

No worries man. On another note, the cancer from 545 has spread to 440! 440 flipped out on me last night during the landing rollout. It's getting bad. Be safe.
