Default Pilots who don't want to pay union dues

So here we are at Colgan finishing up the alpa membership drive. There is a group that won't become a member because either they were anti union or to cheap to pay dues.

So how do we look at these pilots who won't contribute to the cause but won't hesitate to take the benefits earned and financed by others. Scab like behavior? Is the same person who won't pay dues with his pilot group the same type that will scab?

Those pilots aren't required to pay dues until you as a group have retified your first contract, after which they must pay a 'maintenance fee' since they are now being paid as per the CBA and benefit from it, whether they like it or not. If they then refuse to pay, I believe they can be terminated, since you are now a closed shop.

As far as how to treat them, treat them no differently than anyone who voted in favor, at leat until you have that CBA in hand.

Hope that helps.

That may be 2+ years for a contract so for them to pay nothing during this time is pitiful.

Wait, Colgan is Pinnacle so let's say 5years for a contract

Good questions. If they don't want to pay dues or become a member that is there right. However, they are only hurting themselves and the rest of the pilot group. At Colgan we are responsible for dues as of April 1st 2009

Say they want to go to another ALPA carrier that will have agency shop rights in their contract, let us say Delta. They apply four years from now, get hired, and go through training, make it through their first year and are about to get off probabtion.

Most if not all of the legacies that are ALPA require their pilot roster be ALPA members in good standing, so in order to get off probation they will be responsible for their back dues with interest starting from the first day you were responsible for dues. So eventually, they will be responsible for the dues. We are all in this together and we hope they are as well.

Make sense?

[QUOTE=The Juice;585546] Scab like behavior?QUOTE]

This suddenly seems like such petty BS... Crossing a picket line? Flying struck work? Yes those are scabs. Holding ont your money as long as you can? Seems logical to me. And I'm on the organizing team!

Just relax a little....

All Colgan Pilots are responsible for dues starting April 1st, 2009 if they want to become ALPA members down the road ie at FEDEX, UAL, Delta, etc..

You can choose to terminate them if an agency shop provision is negiotiated in the contract.

No one has to join a union, and unless they exhibit scab-like behavior they should be treated just like anyone else.

Hint: Harassment is a huge legal hot-button these days...if you get fired for harassment, even the mighty alpa might not be able to save you. If you get sued personally, alpa will run away as fast as they can.

Like the previous poster said, they have to pay the maintenance fee once you get them a contract. But they do not pay for, or enjoy, some of the other benefits of union membership. I hope you do get an improved contract...if you go concessionary you might want to rethink charging that mx fee.

Yeah i wouldnt worry about it juice.

The people that dont pay their union dues at this moment will not have the benefit of the rest of alpa's services.

Once the contract is signed they will be paying anyway so it wont matter. i mean why would you pay a maintenance fee on the contract when you have no one there to protect you if you get in trouble or want to grieve something.

the thing these people are missing is that our pilot groups will be merging sooner than later. you guys haven't delt with pinnacle management as long as we have. i gladly pay my 1.9% to have all of alpas services at my disposal. and with the management you guys are getting to know you are going to need them. trust me if they could just fire people instead of furloughing them they would do it in a heart beat.
