Default Plantronics MS50 vs. Telex 5x5

I found the Plantronics MS50 which looks a lot like the Telex 5x5 except at a lower price. Can’t find any reviews for the MS50. Anyone using the MS50 with an ear-mold in the CRJ or Q400 who can share their opinions on it? Or a link to any MS50 reviews? Thanks.

I tried using a Plantronics, an older one. The drawback is there is no adjustment on the box attached to the cable like the telex has.

The mic is out of control annoying when flipped up to hot, had to roll up tissue paper and stuff it in the tube make it tolerable for the other guy. A foam cap wouldn't cut it.

PDT has the Plantronics headset in their airplanes and its garbage. If you want a lightweight headset, I would recommend the telex 750.

www.flybystore.com has them for a good price.

a little off topic, but I've had a Plantronics MS200 for the past 5 years in a CRJ. Before that I had an telex 750. Love the MS200.

I used the MS50 in the CRJ for years. The mic sucks in a hot mic environment. I had to put an ear plug over the mic just to make it usable, but it still sucked. I'd get the Telex.

Ditto to the other posters.

I actually started with the MS50 and it was so annoying to the other guy I had to use the POS aircraft headset for the rest of the trip. Then I bought the 5x5. The issue is that the microphone on the MS50 has NO threshold control, it just picks up absolutely everything and blasts it into the intercom.

Save yourself a headache and just buy the telex. Or better yet, go with the 750 or clarity aloft. One of those will probably be my next headset.

Thanks guys. Exactly the kind of input I was looking for. I'm going to go with the Telex 5x5.

If your going with the 5x5, check out this setup. I've been wanting to try it.

The Regional Jet Package from PilotStuff.com

That's the package I got for the CRJ. Works great. Went through 2 Plantronics setups and got rid of them. The gain on the 5X5 is what makes it better. They also sell a filter that fits inline of the earmolds. Get that too. Or the acft sounds get pretty loud in some of the CRJs. Nothing like talking normally and then "SELCAL, SELCAL" chimes in about 20 times louder.

The problem with that setup is that the airtubes to the earpieces are of unequal length leading unequal volumes between the two ears.

If you get yours at Marv Golden, they have kits for making form fitting ear molds.

After you get your stuff, you can go to a hardware and get airline tubing (like for a fish tank pump) to make your own. Just make sure you keep the tubes leading to the earpieces are of equal length by locating the T joint right in back of your head and make the output tube from the headset long enough to reach the T joint.
