It could also be that no hotel is willing to house the students. They might have ticked off every hotel in the city by not paying their bills.

Right now it is a crap shoot wherever you go. 10 years ago you were nuts to refuse a job at ACA, Comair, or Mesaba. Where are they now? Anytime you take a job with a company (regional) that allows another company (mainline) to control its long term viability as a business, then you are in trouble over the long term. Hopefully you can get hired as the wave is building, and get out before it crests.
Take the first class date you can get, get trained, build time, and get the hell out as soon as possible. If you choose to stay at a regional long term you will probably get the shaft in the end. It is the nature of the business. If you can't deal with that, get an accounting degree. This business is unstable by nature and has been since the 20s. In my time in this industry I've been through two pilot strikes and a shutdown in bankruptcy. I've seen two regionals I worked for and respected slowly dismantled and destroyed by their mainline partners in favor of cheaper lift.
As Lee Strasberg said in the Godfather, this is the life you have chosen. It has its good and bad aspects. The good is working at a job you truly enjoy (flying). The bad is the industry instablility and the crap that comes with it. If you can't take the bad, then the world needs lots of accountants.

Sorry to hear that. I'd start looking elsewhere if I were you. There are a large amount of people leaving and they are still canceling classes. Not a good sign.
