Interviews in ATL
Training for ERJ is in IAH (3 new-hire classes in March / 16 each class) Training for CRJ is in ATL (No new-hire classes at this time) |
I have a quick question about getting an interview. I applied 2 weeks ago I have 1030 TT, 300 multi, a crj course pass, and a full time flying job. My issue is that while I wound up out of aviation for 2 years while not being able to find a flying job I accidentally let my cfi expire during that time and failed the reinstatement the first time I took it. That took me from 2 checkride busts to 3 (the other 2 were private and cfi initial). Am I toast now for xjet or that one of those situations that might be looked at differently?

Good luck |
Can anybody give me info on Express Jet? I applied about a week ago and would like to get some info. (I am at about 2300 hrs with 600 turbine.)
Is there anything I can do to get my resume seen there? What is the junior base? (If not IAH, how long would it take for me to get there?) How long would I expect to be on reserve and do you fly much on reserve? What is the pay during training and how long does training take on average? Any other info that you can give me would be extremely helpful! I take positive and negative. Thanks! |

I'll let a newer pilot chime in if I'm wrong but from what I've seen, as long as the hiring continues, you should be able to get whatever base you want within a few months. Junior base changes. Probably Newark right now but it's not uncommon for classes to be sent where they are needed operationally. Reserve is probably four months to a year right now and depends on attrition and base. Training is seven weeks or so. Three plus weeks of Monday to Friday and then you get into training events which can be anytime.

Thanks. Are you given the 75 hour min guarantee during training, or is it reduced? What about uniform expense and housing during training?
Seriously, you get two checks of about $740 to cover your entire training duration. It's per diem, not pay, so shouldn't be taxable, but that's it. Uniform is payroll deducted over time ($25 per pay period after training is over). Most items are deductible, but luggage isn't, and can cost upwards of $400 for leather briefcase and metal roller bag, though you are not required to get these. Some people opt for cheaper options. Don't buy the hat unless your girlfriend thinks you look hot in it. They put you in a hotel with a roommate assigned when you show up. Hopefully, you like him (or her, if you are a girl). Thankfully I had some other sources of income to get me through training. You will "bid" for your base in seniority order (age) in your class, and it's based on what the company needs at the moment. If you really want a particular place, you can probably trade there pretty soon if you don't get it. Newark and Chicago tend to be more junior. Beware what you wish for - everyone is told how houston is the best and newark sucks, but you'll sit on short call reserve in Houston for a LONG time but I almost had a relief line in Newark in my second full month on reserve. Basically, if you are going to live in base bid where you want to live. If you are going to commute, consider other factors. |

75 hours starts once you pass your PC. During training it's per diem only. Something like $1500 for the seven weeks but that was when I started five years ago. Might be a little more now. Housing is covered but all uniform stuff you are on your own for. Pants, shirts, tie, eppulates, bag, flight kit, binders, etc. You get some uniform reimbursement expenses but that starts after a year of service.

Anyone here have the April 23rd class date? Im in! =), and for any of you wondering they lowered the mins back down again, That was the only reason why I was offered the class date. I originally had a little over 1000TT and they told me to keep flying and update my airline apps as much as possible. I was also told to keep in touch. so I called last week just to let them know my current times and that I was still interested, went off on a dual flight when I got back received a call from Dale giving me the good news :)
PS: new mins are 1000TT and 50ME GOOD LUCK! |
I have an ExpressJet question.. What's up with these schedules (ATL/CRJ200)?

Got ya. Do you know if they are less interested with guys that exceed the mins by a fair amount? I have 2300 hrs, 600 turbine, and a little more multi. I submitted my resume 2 weeks or so ago and haven't heard anything. I didn't know the average response time. (I might be a little over-excited, but figured I would ask.)

Are they using Flight Safety at Hobby(HOU), or do they still use the sims in the old ExpressJet training center on JFK Blvd at Houston Intercontinental(IAH)? That place brings back memories. :o
|
People are getting off reserve in 4 months now? sonofa...
They still have the sims in IAH as far as I know. Makes you miss Hoot County, huh? I have used the sims in HOU twice now... such a crappy area. |
Hobby and IAH are both in full effect.

FRom those who just interviewed, what's the deal with hiring the rest of the year. The company hasnt really said anything official for hiring past Aptil.

The company has officially said in a memo to the pilot group that upgrading will continue through the end of the year and new hire classes will be scheduled indefinitely. |

In the schoolhouse yesterday. Officially no newhire classes are scheduled past May. Thoughts are that they hired too much (not sure about that, see next statement). But upgrades are supposed to continue the rest of the year. So really they would almost have to continue newhire classes.
Also.. word is that we have hired 600+ pilots since hiring began and have lost almost that many. Someone threw out a number of 70 pilots have really only been added to the list when you take into account the amount of people leaving. All this just came from folks in the training center. Even they dont seem to know whats going on as you can see. |

How can we possibly have hired too many? I got junior manned the other day in ORD because we didn't have a single reserve available!

I was just relaying what was heard yesterday. Dont shoot the messenger. I am skeptical of all that was said. Who knows really whats up or where those numbers were coming from.

I interviewed about a week ago, got offered the job, and they said right now there are two classes scheduled in May. The recruiter said after that they are taking a break for "summer", then classes will resume.
I think they'll keep interviewing during that time and start putting people in a pool. I do know that they are having a tough time finding applicants that meet the new 1200 hour requirements. Who knows how true this all is, but they seemed to be unsure if they would even be able to fill classes if they wanted to continue. |

16 upgrades scheduled for june-july. only one class and they have been hiring 2 first officers for every upgrade so I think it is safe to say they will keep small classes running through the summer and after that it is dependent on United's contract progress and block hour projections. I was told that if you have the time they are are putting you right into class.

There are rumors swirling rampant about everything from tons more flying and more planes to a halt in hiring. I've learned to just take it one month at a time, wait for the official briefings from the company, and take it as it comes. I know for a fact today that the vacancy bid that just came out only has one upgrade class. Immediately, people are taking this to mean a slowdown in hiring/upgrades is now a trend, but one data point does not a trend make. It could be because training facilities/instructors are limited and they need FO's more than captains. Yes, I'd like to see more upgrades because I've rolled the dice on a 3-year upgrade (I can hope). But we'll see what happens later in the year. I also have official attrition numbers, and we are losing (on the xjet side), about 12-16 people per month on average. Definitely not enough to account for the 32-48 they've been hiring new each month. That being said, we are starting to see some more movement of captains towards other larger (aircraft size-wise) carriers. I also know they just hired quite a few new instructors. Doesn't make sense to do that and then cut hiring way back all the sudden. But again, you can't extrapolate a long term trend from one piece of data. So are we gearing up for something? Work rules? Anticipating new flying/contracts? Anticipating attrition increasing end of year? Or were we just understaffed and hiring will slow in a few months? No one really knows for sure. Like I said, one month at a time. |
Part of the flight instructor hiring is based on what our new management wants the flight instructor job to entail. Before a flight instructor didn't have to fly the line at all and now ASA management wants 2 months training and 1 month flying the line. That is the idea anyway and we have a couple old timers who are great guys and really good instructors but don't meet the age requirement... no one knows what will happen with them.
