What gets me is that they do it to people who know better. Paper pusher guy comes to work in our office and touts to me (IT guy) how he gets beta chips from Intel and pre-releases from Microsoft and how his (I'm dating myself) dialup is faster than my ISDN. Yes, he was on AOL.

This happened at a time when the FFDO program is struggling for survival.

 

OK first of all FFDOs are Federal Agents. They have a specific job and a tiny jurisdiction but they are Federal Agents. If I were an FFDO and I needed to call 911 because I was in danger of being mugged or something like that, I would preface my call with the words "Federal Agent in need of assistance." The cops would show twice as fast. Let them argue with me after they save my butt.

Secondly, anyone can make a citizens arrest. The jerk off pilot was within his rights to make the traffic stop. Of course, when the real cops showed up, they let the other guy go and questioned the pilot. Obviously he misjudged the importance of "arresting" the driver. Something tells me he often makes misjudgements. However, if the guy he pulled over had a kid in the trunk and he saved a life, he would have been a hero.

Like they tell you in FFDO training (I'm told) you'll be OK if you can articulate why you did what you did and they buy it. It's all about the result. Just like after an aircraft accident/incident. If you blow SOP but save the day, you're a hero.

Is this pilot a tool? Does he have an inferiority complex? Probably. My guess is we won't hear much more about this. And no, he's not done as a pilot. Probably done as an FFDO though.

 

FFDOs are NOT Federal Agents. We are Federal Officers (it's in the name). We don't have ANY jurisdiction outside of our VERY limited space in the aircraft. The only reason we are federal is because our jurisdiction is across all 50 states.

I'm not about to get into our SOPs on a public board. But he was COMPLETELY out of line. Anyone that tries to justify his actions is crazy. He broke so many SOPs I can't even count them. He's done. End of story.
