Domicile in the DC area
#1
I was wondering if any of you guys have any info on domiciling in the DC area. (IAD, DCA or BWI)
How do you like it?
How hard is it to get the DC area as a domicile and keep it?
etc, etc.
I am currently living here and am thinking about staying here. Would like to domicile here.
Thanks!
Jeff

Its always best to live in base if able. However it may be hard to hold it right away after training. But usually you will be able to use a vacancy and relocate to where you want to be.
Pick a company that is based there and if you dont get that base, at least you can always wait for the next vacancy to come out and work your way in.

That is what i was thinking (picking a company that is based in this area).
Agreed, i dont think i want to commute somewhere to sit reserve or even fly. I have no experience, but folks i have talked to say commuting can be really tough.
(i had a friend of mine at United who was commuting from denver to DC..OUCH!) Luckily his parents live here.

We have a IAD base at ExpressJet on the CRJ side which is junior and looks like the next new-hire class the majority will be based there.
Republic and AWAC are hiring and they also have bases in DC area.

I live outside of DC and I commute. Obviously you want to live in base, but commuting wise it isnt too bad since IAD, DCA and BWI are all connected through the Metro. You basically have three airports instead of one. Sure, it'll be nice to always get a seat or always have flights available but paying 6 bucks and hopping on a Metro Bus to Rosslyn or Greenbelt is a small price to pay to get home.

That is kind of mine line of thinking too. I retire soon, wife has lead on J-O-B and we like it here....was thinking the DC base might be perfect, but i wasnt sure if you guys had any "gotcha's" that you might know of.

There are no real "gotcha's" other than that it's an extremely expensive area and the traffic is horrific and the people are uppity!
Another huge negative is the presence of the United States Congress and the President and all the convective turbulence that rises from their buildings.
But if you already live in the area and can afford it it's not bad. The AWAC DCA base is pretty senior but most folks who want it can hold it pretty quickly I think. IAD has traditionally gone junior for most RJ carriers which have a crew domicile there.
I don't think any regionals have a domicile at BWI.
One thing to keep in mind is the traffic as it can slow to a crawl at times and being 20 miles from the airport could theoretically be a long time from the airport. But like I said, if you know the area then you already know that.
