When asked why? he said it was a bigger plane, more people and therefore more responsibilty.

I asked him, so how about a full 50 seater airplane? , or a very light 737 carrying lets say 40 people?

Who has more responsibily?

The point I wanted to make him understand is that it's the same.

If you aren't "ready" for a 737, then you aren't "ready" for a 145 either. (Or a 172 for that matter)

I undertand no one was debating the responsibility of the two here, but airplane size doesn't matter when it come to carrying lives.

Experience does matter in how you carry out that responsibility though!

Another question - if someone were to begin with a regional at the beginning of the peak of retirements (in between 2018 and 2024), (a) how would movement be at regional airlines, and (b) how quickly would someone make it from regional FO -> regional Capt -> major FO? Just a guess?

Because if majors are hiring steadily (which is pretty much a given - not necessarily a "shortage," but certainly a great deal of hiring), the more senior guys at regional airlines will jump over to a major, freeing up space at a regional and forcing regional airlines to hire quite a bit, right? In other words, for someone who will be beginning their career with the airlines around 2020, it is a good time for both regional and major hiring a few years later, correct?

I could careless if the new FO had Zero hours, just as long as he is capable to do his job. You guys fixated on this time thing, its more an ego thing then safety. prove me wrong!

Point out one accident at the majors that was contributed to the low time FO, now an under qualified CA there out there and if I was a new FO I wouldn't fly with them. That's the problem. You should have at least four years experience at a company before bidding to captain and new start ups should have to hire street captains with at least four years experience as a PIC
