I forget the exact wording, but the way I remember it was that it implied hats were required on the ramp (eg, walkaround).

So before the contract you guys had to wear hats? CJC did until our CP 5x5 said we didn't in 2010.

As I said, no one enforced it so it was basically optional. Who knows. This is the same FOM that stated that Captains should not volunteer to let FOs fly the leg even though that was the industry practice. There were always things in there to hang you by.
Post merger here, the NW pilots were all wearing their hats all the time, even on walkarounds (the hat is optional on a walkaround) just to get used to wearing them and keep from forgetting them. We had at least one guy get his hat sucked up into the pack intake on an Airbus! |

Ha! I forgot about that phrase. That was definitely a red flag.

It's good to know that the company is running so smoothly all management has to worry about is uniforms.

I remember sometime around 2005 there was someone new in the Flight Ops department at Pinnacle and they decided that hats should be required. So like everybody else, I went out and bought a hat, but a month later they came out and said no more hats... That same hat sits in my closet with an inch of dust on it, I have a feeling that very shortly it will be worn for the first time.
Edit...Some people look good with a hat, not me!!! |

I've always heard that's how you can tell a guy was NWA..... Hat is In the pocket of his roller bag.:)
When I was in newhire class, one of the guys played a joke on us and reminded us that we had to wear the hat even when we went to the lav in cruise. That gave my OE captain a good laugh on my first trip when I donned the hat to go shake hands with the champ. |

Doesn't that mean no hats on the ramp, so it won't blow off and FOD out an engine?

It was funny.. either they put it in the pocket of the roller bag, or wore it ALL the time, even on the walkaround, hence the airbus nomming his hat.
