In this case, the cancellation was for a total of 86 minutes. That would bring the original day to 3hrs, 6 minutes. To get to your original gauruntee of 3hrs, 47 minutes it would take an additional 31 minutes. So the cancellation pay would be 31 minutes. You see the problem here? This is NOT the way it used to be. A more extreme example would include a round trip that got cancelled, like a SFO-RDM which credits like 4 hours. Then, it would not matter how much extra you flew or repo'd the entire day, you're still only going to get your original gauruntee. The old interpretation, yes, it was the best. But if you think this new one is as well, wake up and smell the coffee, it's not.
My original guarantee was 3:47, of which I still would have eclipsed if you take out the repos. The policy is for a single flight value unless your entire day is cancelled. If I had flown 3:21 minutes without the two cancellations then I would have received 3:21 plus 86 for the cancelled flights and the 24 for the repos as long as they didn't reflow me onto another round trip (3:21+86+24=5:11). In this case it would come down to the higher of the two trips (cancelled vs. reflow).

What has happened to you?

Well, for one thing I think a fair cost of living adjustment would be in order. Our current rates have been stagnant for a long time now (5 years I believe). Our current proposal locks in 1% for the next 3 years, so 1% over an 8 year period (and no retro pay) has really decreased one's buying power. Also, management a while back asked the pilot group to "deal them an ace" and fly the 70 seat jets for 50 seat pay to win a contract, and we wouldn't regret it. Well, nothing has transpired since then that we "wouldn't regret". In fact, suprise suprise, the 70 seat jets were already there, so in reality the contract was probably already won before they asked for this.

Skywest is not a bad place to work. I'm not unhappy here. However we have given alot and it would be nice to see some good faith from management, especially seeing how profitable the company is. These constant "pen stroke" policy changes and interpretations, bad pay proposals, etc are leading us down a bad road. I just fear how far it can go before it stops. Maybe we do need ALPA.

This is what I had a couple weeks ago:

Scheduled Day
..............BLOCK CREDIT
SFO-MFR 1:35 1:28
MFR-SFO 1:37 1:30
SFO-SMF :39 :39
SMF-SFO :47 :42
SFO-FAT :56 :56
TOTALS 5:34 5:15

That day, our SMF roundtrip got cancelled. What I ended up with was:

..............BLOCK CREDIT
SFO-MFR 1:35 1:35
MFR-SFO 1:47 1:47
SFO-FAT :56 :56
TOTALS 4:18 4:18

Now, from the moment I started working here the policy was to always add in the FULL value of the cancelled flights, in this case, I used to get 81 minutes for the round trip, the original credit value. That would have been a day total of 5:39. However, what I got was only :57, just enough to bring me to my original daily gauruntee, so I lost 24 minutes of pay in this case. I called payroll and they said that this was a "new interpretation" of the policy.

I guess this kind of stuff just pi$$es me off. Why all the sudden the new interpretation? I wish we had some solid, enforceable policies rather than these "agreements" we have now.

Interesting, I wonder why I haven't had this problem. I fly the SFO/PDX system all the time and it seems like cancelled flights are a daily occurrence this time of year. I have yet to have your scenario happen.

I do agree that we need a forcible contract. I am openly anti-union but I feel that in this industry unions are a necessary EVIL.

“AT WILL EMPLOYEMENT” doesn’t work in this industry. Never has & never will.

all that said SKW seems to be getting fat with FO's in the BRO. SLC and DEN FO's on reserve seem to be working anywhere from 10 hours a month to none at all. If you want to work get the jet if not bro, or live in FAT

Block hours=hours you actually fly. Usually from the time the door closes to the time the door opens. This is what is used for legality purposes as well as what you can put in your logbook. Credit is what you get paid. So, if the gaurunteed credit is 43 minutes for the flight and you fly faster, say 39 minutes, you still get 43 minutes of pay (credit pay) but log 39 minutes of flight time (block time).

Correct, I'll just add a little to that. At SKW when you get your schedule you see two things: Estimated Block & Credit. Estimated block is the time that your code share (United/Delta @ SKW) says the flight should take. Credit is Historic Block, in other words, the historic average block of how long the flight actually took. Credit is what we get paid unless Actual Block (what we fly) exceeds credit then we get paid Actual Block (we get paid the better of the two: Actual Block or Credit).
