Atp and hiring
Just a real quick one but currently regionals are asking for an mins and a ATP written to apply.
This is assuming that when you get your type rating your also doing your ATP check in the sim at the same time. Correct me please if Im wrong.
After July 1st when the 2nd installment of the new ATP rule goes into effect will the regionals still be hiring with just a written and then paying for their new guy to do the 30 hrs classroom and 10 hours sim C or D or will you have to have the ATP in hand period before you apply. Does anyone know?

Actually not sure.. I know for instance if your Joe private pilot come july 1st you will have to go through this program to get your atp. My understanding is that the faa is going to make a "new" program, probably just a CRM course but are also tacking on the requirement for specific atp training in a simulator. Again from what my understanding was is that its a "new" program.

61.158 lists the subjects covered in the GS for the ATP, it's a lot more than "just a CRM course." In the Final Rule the FAA addresses Basic Indoc v. the ACTP training. Their take is the ACTP is basic stuff a pilot should know before working at an airline so they are two different classes. They will allow an airline to reduce their Basic Indoc if the new hire went through a ACTP they ran because they figure the operation control and MEL modules will carry over.

Airlines can do the training if needed, but they can't just say it's already covered by their current bare-bones program.
I'm sure the regionals will have to provide this training to attract applicants, although I suspect the majors will require the military guys to get it on their own.
Personally, I'm Ok with it. I remember when mesa was upgrading FO's with a couple sim sessions and day or two of ground refresher...frankly some of those folks weren't CA's...they were FO's who knew how to use a tiller.

The additional training will be a prerequisite to taking the ATP written, and is in addition to airline training programs. If regional (or other companies) require mins+ written, that's basically saying they're not paying for it.
I don't know where people get the idea that "regionals can't fill classes". Where are you getting this info? Maybe silver/eagle aren't filling classes, but I happen to know there's a line out the door for 100% full classes month after month where I work. A true shortage of qualified applicants will be evidenced on the regional side when they drop the ATP written requirement, and/or raise FO pay scales.
