Well, in Nebraska and most of the places in the lower 48 that get EAS, there are friggin roads and highways. In fact, many of the places that get EAS are on major interstate routes around 2hrs or less than the bigger hubs. I know quite a few of the airports served by Great Lakes that fall into that situation (and even closer to the hub).
That's not the same as Alaska. There are no roads out there. Whether it's wrong or right for people to be living there, it's not the same IMO. Unfortunately many of these Alaskan villages are bloated past what can be supported "by the land" due to the EAS, so now it's an intangible situation where you'd have to rip people from their homes or let them die.
But in that same idea, the only thing that I'd consider subsidizing for all of these communities is EMS stuff Medicaid pays for lots of flights here in Alaska. There's lots of waste in that too, but thinking about down south where you actually have roads, to subsidize a regional airline flying into your town because you don't want to take an airport shuttle 2hrs to the hub (and bypass parking and walking) is beyond ridiculous. That is not a situation that is anywhere near as "out of your hands" as growing up and living in a village 700+ miles outside of the nearest road system.

For example, in my home state of Wyoming.
Laramie is EAS. It's a 50 mile drive to Cheyenne.
Worland is EAS. It's a 80 mile drive to Riverton
Cody is EAS. It's about 100 miles to Billings.
Next door in Nebraska
Chadron is about 100 miles to Rapid City, SD
Alliance is 150 to either Cheyenne or Rapid City.
You could easily close Chadron, and Alliance is under 50 miles away.

For those of you not from the western Great Plains or Rockies, most of the speed limits are 75 in these areas and the roads are maintained well enough to be able to do all but the day of heavy snowfall.
It's not like New York or Boston where 100 miles might as well be the freakin Moon.
From Cody to Billings, I think you have 3 stop signs and 2 traffic lights taking 14A to 310 to I-90. There are more traffic lights within 2 miles of the airport than the rest of the route.
From Laramie to Cheyenne, you may not even have a stop sign depending on where in the Laramie area you are getting on I-80 from then it's all interstate until you are in Cheyenne.
Worland to Riverton is I think 3 stoplights going through Thermopolis and a stop light in Shoshoni at the US20/26 split coming out of Wind River Canyon.
It's not like trying to drive from Groton CT to BOS.
