That's not even close to an accurate analogy. Even after you have been screened using MCAT and undergraduate GPA, those that manage to be accepted into a medical school, only 80% will graduate. I can't imagine how many each year aren't admitted. When I was a flight instructor, I had some of the dumbest people on earth eventually get the skills and knowledge necessary to pass a checkride. It may have cost them $30,000 per ticket, but they were loaded and even after several "come to Jesus" meetings, they eventually went back to their country of origin with a fresh certificate.

The rote portion of flying the airplane is the simple part of being a pilot. People that try to boil it down to that have other agendas.

Having worked with both doctors and lawyers, I stick with my fix. You are naive to think otherwise. However, I respect your opinion.

And that's why military pilots are respected--doing fine on Monday, on the train home on Friday. Most classes lose 20% of the entering students. The class ahead of mad lost 20% before flight one. Can't buy your way to wings.

I've seen pretty politically powerful UPT students get tossed--just ask a CT Governor's son. Dean Martin's son had loads of pull-Presidential pull. Physics and weak ability overcame that pull. Loads of Flag Officers have killed their sons with pull. So, the military mission has a way of evening things out. So, no you can't buy your way to military wings and cases where pull was applied, funerals were a distinct possibility.

There is a pool of money available for pilots which is more or less static (there is a little room for negotiation) and what is negotiated is how to divvy it up. I'm not sure who decided what the captain/FO split should be but it is definitely slanted in favor of captains at the regional level.

For the total compensation package to increase in a meaningful way at contractor companies the majors will have to decide they want to pay regional pilots more. In my opinion the dearth of qualified regional candidates will eventually force compensation higher at the lower end of the industry. That could mean higher regional wages or a transfer of flying to mainline.

Restoring the profession. We thumbed our noses at small airplane flying and we all paid a heavy price.

Now is the time to make it right and bring the profession to the high level it deserves.
