Looks like this thread ran its course a few weeks back, but I got this postcard in the mail yesterday from Embry Riddle which looks like it may be connected to the topic of this January summit. They probably are sending out tons of these, just spamming the FAA database. They are not the only people doing that, Expressjet is doing it lately as well.

I found it interesting there were so many questions on the survey trying to find out how much money it would take to get me to quit my current flying job and apply to a regional. I did check the box that said "would $55k get you interested" because it was the highest option they had listed, but on later reflection I decided that ~$80k would probably be it. They need to get the pay up to mainline FO pay figures because it's the same job.

Good answers Cubdriver! I have one problem with these schools, politicians, and other special interest groups pushing how to fix the regional airline agendas. They are not the ones who control the show! If the legacy and regional airlines refuse to address or fix the issues it's game over. I personally don't believe the legacy carriers give a squat either way. Why should they, you can't make them!

No links here- the process for vetting surveys is listed in a sticky in the Aviation Surveys forum. E-R can ask for it to be posted there if they wish, but not here. Lots of reasons for this, too many to list.

Incorrect. Most U.S.pilots don't realize how bad the shortage is. The U.S. has the LEAST pilot shortage problem of any country.

Foreign airlines, especially Asia and China have way, way less pilots than the U.S.carriers. For then to do substantially more U.S.flying they would need to hire U.S.pilots, as none are available elsewhere.

That is why foreign carriers are opening U.S.pilot bases.

"I hear this constantly but want to know specifically what US Air Force students get access to that makes them gods among."

They (military) are not gods. The reason they can fly like they do with few hours have multiple reasons:

1. To start with, they medically disqualify many people, so physically they are better, on average.

2. You have to graduate HS with decent grades, and get into a university (for fixed wing), for them to even Consider testing you. If you get to test, then take only the very top few percent of this allows to test. An average guy has no hope of scoring high enough on the test to even be considered.

3. The military spends WAY more money...Better equipment, better trained instructors, better training infrastructure, better ground training....then the civilians do.

4. The training itself is MUCH more demanding...they expect they're mil students to study more and learn more, in greater detail, than a flash civilian place.

The problem with mil training is they can't train enough pilots with their system to satisfy the U.S.needs, much less the test I'd the shelf.

That would make the career more attractive and more guys would want to become pilots...BUT is would not help the shortage...because you need a LOT OF MONEY to become a pilot...way more relative to the average income thann in the past, AND you can't get a bank loan anymore to pay for all your training, like u could in the past...
