Really also a lot of things come down to the person, I know a few guys that went out to the bars on week nights as well as weekends and still passed first attempt, no extra sims and book worms struggled through and failed tests. There is no set way, hopefully you found study habits over the years that work.

This. I hadn't flown IFR in at least 5 years (VFR only jobs) before I did my initial 121 training, and I did fine. But I'm not shy, and ask for help if I need it. Don't be ashamed to admit you would like to try something again, or ask people if they have study guides. It all helps.

The bigger mystery is how you can't spell mystery.

If you've been doing this for years and have study habits that work, absolutely - keep doing what works for you. I was reading this as the IP was new to the 121 world and didn't yet have a plan of attack.

I watch this play out on a daily basis. Yes, there are exceptions to everything I've posted (particularly for those with a good deal of experience). For those new to the 121 world (which is a substantial amount of the new hires at the regionals) I stand by my suggestions. I've watched every single one of those characteristics in those who don't succeed on multiple occasions.

Are there those who do all the right things and don't make it - it happens, but not very often.
