Seems like every FO base with the exception of Chicago can be had out or within a few months of training. With the amount of FOs leaving for better opportunities & in the upgrade pipeline, reserve shouldn’t be longer than a few months. FOs hired today can likely expect 18-24 months until upgrade.

Living near DTW? Just a guess here, but, I think you'd want a base that has a lot of Delta flights, say LGA or BOS. Between Delta, American and Spirit, there are about a dozen non stops a day to LGA. (the three AA's are ours so you'd get priority over folks from other air lines). DTW to CMH, you'd have about 5 a day, all ours. With a driving back up, 3.5hrs? Seems like a lot of driving but on a 3 or 4 day wouldn't be too bad and a pad in CMH is likely to be a lot cheaper.
Someone else with experience in commuting will add to this I'm sure, I'm lucky enough to live between two bases so other than picked up trips in other bases, I don't commute. What I did above was simply pick the LGA base then go to Google Flights and look for flights, one way, direct, between DTW and LGA. (this excludes the cargo folks of course) If you do this with other bases you'll be able to see the flights between the two. If you go up to one stop, you'll see more but that seems a whole other level of torture to me.
I think this is Random's way of saying, commuting is no fun at all. Much better to live in base if you can.
