I wasn't talking about ex-mil flying civilian. I was saying it's OK for a hornet pilot to check out his wingman's gear.

Ad hoc inflight inspections by other random aircraft are definitely not OK. You need to do some planning and coordination for formation flying of any sort, and participants need to be trained.

Exception for mil, since they do form flying as a matter of course.
Even then you need to be careful.
The former F-14 IP, when flying with a Marine SNA in NAS Corpus Christi TX tried to help an F-14 with a gear malfunction.
Tried to join up on the F-14 in the T-34 and basically got sucked up into the TomCat and crushed the cockpit. Crashed into the bay with two fatalities. Like Excargodog said - careful.

I remember that one. Also the B-70. Dissimilar (significantly dissimilar) is always risky, and needs careful planning and analysis. AAR for example is a special skill. My example was like aircraft who are accustomed to flying form with each other.

Military arrogance, lots of assumptions. Little surprise.

Dude. I was talking about people who are trained and practice it routinely.

Military who are not flying mil should not do it, in an ad hoc manner.

Military in dissimilar A/C should not do it either, unless it's part of their mission (ex AAR).

Civilians who plan, train, and prepare are just fine too.

You learn that there were chems in his blood stream.

After the incident, he knew he would be tested.

Then yes, I suppose that would be convenient…
