I've been of the opinion that bins should auto-lock for takeoff and landing.

Unlock on climb/cruise when the sign comes off (or maybe 10K), and at the gate with sign off.

Of give the FA's a lock/unlock switch.

Without locking bins, I think the certification ASSumptions are suspect. Although I have to admit there have been some spectacularly (surprisingly) successful evacs in recent memory, seconds before the plane was consumed in flames.

Why not ban for life everyone on video that is shown carrying their bags off?

There's plenty of video evidence, Airlines have banned people for WAY less.

Even though we all see it coming, it's going to take massive loss of life to change seat pitch/carry on issues. Getting the regulators or airlines to get ahead of this would be fantastic, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

The only problem with locking bins is I could see the absolute morons we carry around standing there trying to force open the bin while everyone behind them dies of smoke inhalation.

Put the sensors under the handle thatll shock em; just like the gag we all got from our Uncles and got zapped when we shook his hand back in the day

One solution would be FAA fines but the language would have to be airtight and not overly broad.

Right up until some yahoo puts his laptop or batteries in the overhead carryon luggage, and the overhead lock doesn't open, for fire access...
