Default Armed pilots want more police-like power

An airliner takes off across the sun. Armed pilots would like to see the Federal Flight Deck Officer program expanded to better protect aviation.

I don't see a problem with it. If I recall, the one incident (the US Airways accidental discharge) was when the guy was putting the gun up. I've personally seen that be annoying for guys to do in a smaller cockpit.

But, I do love this guy:

"Stun guns maybe, but not guns," said Russell Ginsberg, of Plantation. "If a bullet pierces the hull or skin of an aircraft it could be catastrophic."
Clearly an expert on the subject!

Why is there a Federal Flight Deck Officers association, and why do they need representation?

"Need" is in the eye of the beholder.

But I'm a fan of the FDO program...another layer of security and planning obstacle for the bad guys with zero labor costs to boot. Can't hurt.

The average airline pilot is smarter and more capable than the average cop...if they can weapons, no reason we can't.

There ain't no PO-PO at Three Five OH.

However there are lots of people off meds, too far on meds and just freakin' crazy. The general public represents a far greater danger then "terrorists".

"The cost to put a federal air marshal on a flight is about $3,300, compared with about $15 for an armed pilot."

I bet a lot of guys are still waiting on a pay-check!!!

Being a former LEO I can tell
You a lot of training is involved in "carrying" a weapon and exercising police powers. I've met many FFDO's who should not have access to a weapon in my opinion. It's a great program but in my opinion the majority of pilots who want to openly "carry" the weapon are pilots who always wanted to be cops as kids and now are seeing a route to that end. Hell...we have pilots complaining about taking responsibility of an iPad...yet they want to openly carry a gun because they are FFDO's...come on. These are also the same guys who I would pull over and they would flash the FFDO badge and say "im a federal law enforcement officer.". Come on....abuse of the program guys..seriously!

For every FFDO that you have met that shouldn't be carrying a weapon, I can show you an equal or greater number of LEOs that shouldn't carrying weapons either. Of course some of these people also need to be wearing helmets when they leave the house.

I'm also ex-Leo, current FFDO. The training does not compare. 5 months in an academy and on duty training vs the FFDO training. FFDO's do not need more police authority or open carry. Their mission is simple and does not require it.

I agree with that. Within the current scope of the FFDO program, the training is adequate. We probably don't need FFDO's enforcing laws outside the cockpit.
