Default Russian Sukhoi plane missing on test flight

Russian Sukhoi plane missing on test flight in Indonesia | Reuters

(Reuters) - A Russian Sukhoi passenger plane with 46 people on board, including businessmen and Russian envoys, has gone missing during a demonstration flight over West Java in Indonesia, officials said on Wednesday.

Indonesia's search and rescue agency said radio contact was lost with the plane after it descended to 6,000 feet. The Indonesia military said the plane "fell" from the sky.

The plane was carrying Indonesia businessmen and Russian embassy officials, the transport ministry said.

"The plane was doing the first flight around midday and returned to the airport, but when it took off the second time, it lost contact around Bogor," said Bambang Ervan, the transport ministry spokesman.

Olga Kayukova, a spokeswoman for Russia's United Aircraft Corporation, told Reuters the Sukhoi Superjet-100 was on a second flight as part of a demonstration programme in Indonesia.

"The first flight was carried out in a normal mode ... The pre-flight preparations were carried out in full and the plane was completely ready to fly," she said.

"According to information from Indonesia, the contact with the plane was broken after 20 minutes from the take off, at 1435 local time. Search works are under way."

Local television reported that a search operation would be carried out from early on Thursday.

The Sukhoi's Superjet 100, with a capacity of 68-103 passengers, was developed in partnership with Boeing (BA.N) and Italy's Finmeccanica (SIFI.MI).

Sukhoi, which has orders for 170 planes, plans to produce up to 1,000 superjets, primarily for foreign markets.

This wasn't testing. This was demonstration. There were a bunch of people on board.

This reminds me of the story of the F/A who fell out of the Galley Service door onto the ramp and broke her arm.

When she finally returned to work, one of her co-workers asked, "How on earth did you do that...?"

"Here, like this, watch...." and fell right out the door again.

That's the story anyway.

Obvious on the bottom photo that it looks like an A320 and an EMB170 had a kid...

and the top photo looks like a DO-Jet and a C17 had a baby...

And the Russians have "cutting edge" technology..... ummm.. right.

Im waiting for FAULTPUSH to tell us how safe they really are by taking off in the ice/snow.

Ugh...

Some red flags I've seen: They called off the search and rescue due to weather and it went down (presumably) in mountainous terrain? Um...

Interesting, As an enthusiast I kind of accepted the media misconception; this is a Boeing x Italian project rebadged by Sukhoi. Kind of a Russian flying Lincoln town car if you will...

After a little research this is clearly a serious project. It seems like Boeing is more mentoring the Russians in the ways of aircraft consumerism than assembling the project. I expect to look up and see SuperJets soon. Good on ya Russia.

Thoughts and prayers for all on board and their families. It was just found on the edge of a cliff in mountainous terrain by searchers. No word yet on survivors.

This just now on Yahoo:

CIDAHU, Indonesia (AP) — Helicopters spotted the scattered wreckage of a Russian-made passenger plane on the side of a mist-shrouded mountain Thursday after it disappeared during a demonstration flight in Indonesia with 47 people on board. There was no sign of survivors.
Family members who spent the night at the airport broke down in tears on hearing the news.
"Rescuers on the helicopters could clearly see the wreckage located at the top of Mount Salak," including the blue-and-white of the aircraft maker, said Gagah Prakoso, a spokesman for the Search and Rescue National Agency.
"There is no sign of any of the passengers," he said. "We're trying to move in closer to the wreckage now."
The Sukhoi Superjet-100, Russia's first new passenger jet since the fall of the Soviet Union two decades ago, left Halim Perdanakusuma Airport in Jakarta on Wednesday afternoon for the second demonstration flight of the day. Potential buyers and journalists were on board.
The jet dropped off the radar 21 minutes later, immediately after the crew asked air traffic control for permission to drop from 10,000 feet to 6,000 feet (3,000 meters to 1,800 meters), said Daryatmo, chief of the national search and rescue agency.

There's nothing good that can come for this. Some aviation publicity stunts have ended very badly, even when there was nothing wrong with the equipment.
